Creamy-yellow flowers set Summerific® Coconut Cream Hibiscus apart from the familiar pink and red palette of hardy hibiscus. Hibiscus hybrid ‘Coconut Cream’ carries large, softly yellow blooms with dark red eyes above deep green foliage. This upright, globe-shaped perennial stands about 4 to 4½ feet tall and roughly 4 feet wide. It begins flowering earlier than many hardy hibiscus selections and continues from midsummer into late summer.

Summerific® Coconut Cream Hibiscus was selected for the darkest yellow-toned flowers yet achieved in its breeding program, along with an earlier bloom season and a more upright habit than earlier yellow selections. Its breeding comes from hardy hibiscus with North American native ancestry, giving the plant tropical-scale flowers with winter hardiness through USDA zones 4 to 9. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds visit the large flowers, and deer generally avoid the plant. Place it in the middle or back of moist perennial borders, rain gardens, near water features, or as a single late-season specimen where its rounded form has room to develop.

Summerific® Coconut Cream Hibiscus Care

Plant Summerific® Coconut Cream Hibiscus in spring or early fall, preferably before extreme summer heat arrives, in full sun to part sun. It grows best in moist, well-drained loam but adapts to clay, sandy, average, or fertile soils and can tolerate wetter ground after establishment. Acidic soil with a pH below 7.0 is preferred.

Keep newly planted hibiscus consistently moist while roots establish, then continue deep watering during active growth whenever the upper soil begins to dry. Established plants tolerate wet sites better than prolonged drought, and steady moisture supports larger flowers and fuller foliage. Feed in early spring after the ground thaws with a granular perennial or rose fertilizer according to label directions. Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone, particularly during the first winter, while leaving the crown uncovered.

Leave the stems standing through fall, then cut old growth close to the ground in spring before new shoots appear. Deadheading improves appearance but is unnecessary for continued flowering. Hardy hibiscus is among the last perennials to emerge in spring, so allow the soil to warm before evaluating the crown, and watch emerging foliage for Japanese beetle feeding.

Summerific® Coconut Cream Hibiscus Spacing

Space plants about 4 to 4½ feet apart to allow the rounded mature habit to fill out with good air circulation. For containers, use a large pot at least 20 inches wide with drainage holes and a moisture-retentive potting mix. Large containers require frequent moisture checks during hot weather because the broad foliage uses water quickly.

Summerific® Coconut Cream Hibiscus Companion Plants

Bee balm is a good landscape partner in sunny, moisture-retentive soil and extends pollinator activity around the hibiscus during summer. Behind it, Sweetspire can add woody structure and also performs well where soil stays evenly moist or occasionally wet. In oversized containers, elephant ears can share the same high-moisture conditions and provide broad tropical foliage that complements the hibiscus flowers and upright stems.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
