The Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca Pendula') is a striking evergreen conifer grown primarily for its dramatic weeping form and vivid steel-blue needles. When staked, it develops a strong central leader that sweeps upward before sending branches cascading down in long, swooping curtains. Short, powdery blue-green needles are densely clustered in whorled tufts, giving the tree exceptional color and texture year-round. Mature trees typically reach 10 to 12 feet tall with a similar spread, though size varies depending on how the tree is trained and staked.
This tree is native to the Atlas Mountains of northern Africa and is grown as a sculptural specimen in lawns, meadows, cottage gardens, and patio settings. Its evergreen foliage provides four-season interest, and the tree develops a massive, characterful trunk with age. Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar is heat, drought, humidity, and salt tolerant once established, fitting a wide range of landscapes. It is not prone to serious insect or disease problems, though heavy snow and strong winds can damage its branches.
Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar Care
Site Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar in full sun, in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It grows best in deep, well-drained loam with a slightly acidic soil pH, but will tolerate clay and sandy soils as long as drainage is adequate. Shelter the tree from strong winds to prevent branch damage.
Water newly planted trees regularly until established. Once mature, this tree is drought tolerant and requires little supplemental irrigation. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth, and use a layer of mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture.
The form of your Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar is largely shaped by how you train and stake it. A staked central leader will grow upward, while an unsupported leader will cascade downward, so maintaining the stake is essential for an upright, weeping silhouette. Once established with adequate room to grow, this tree requires very little pruning. Avoid removing the lower branches, as this can cause the tree to lose its characteristic form; remove only damaged or crossing limbs as needed.
Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar Spacing
Plant Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar where it has 12 to 24 feet of open space to allow the cascading branches to spread and drape freely. Keep it away from sidewalks, streets, and structures so its sweeping form is not restricted or damaged. Because it does not transplant well, take care to choose the right permanent location before planting. When growing in a pot, choose a container at least 18 inches wide to support the extensive root system and repot every couple years to prevent root circling.
