Variegated English Ivy, Hedera helix 'Variegata', is a vigorous, spreading evergreen woody highly ornamental vine or groundcover with white-variegated green leaves. Hedera helix ‘Variegata’ forms evergreen vines that stay about 6 to 10 inches high as groundcover or climb when given support, with stems capable of extending around 10 feet. Its creamy margins brighten shaded rooms and sheltered garden corners, and the lobed foliage keeps every trailing stem distinct. We prefer it elevated, where the vines can fall freely and each leaf remains visible.
Fine aerial rootlets allow this woody vine to attach to rough walls, trellises, and topiary frames, while unsupported stems spread across the soil. Across much of USDA zones 4 through 10, it can be grown outdoors in containers or carefully contained beds, subject to local guidance on English ivy. Keep the stems off tree trunks and damaged masonry, where attachment can complicate future maintenance. All parts are toxic if eaten, and the sap may irritate sensitive skin, so position the plant beyond the reach of children and pets.
Variegated English Ivy Care
Grow Variegated English Ivy in bright indirect light indoors or partial shade outdoors, with gentle morning sun acceptable in cooler sites. Use a fertile, organic-rich potting mix or garden soil that drains freely and holds moderate moisture. It accepts a broad pH range, though slightly acidic to neutral conditions support steady foliage color.
Water young plants thoroughly whenever the upper inch of soil begins to dry, then empty any saucer so the roots do not remain submerged. Established outdoor plants appreciate weekly moisture during hot, dry periods. Indoor pots should be checked by touch instead of watered on a fixed schedule.
Feed once in spring with a diluted balanced fertilizer, since variegated growth generally needs less nitrogen than all-green ivy. In cold outdoor sites, spread a loose mulch layer over the root zone and leave the stems uncovered.
Trim long vines at any time, cutting just above a leaf node to encourage branching closer to the pot or support. Remove fully green shoots promptly because they can outgrow and cover the variegated sections. Repot indoor plants when roots circle the container, moving up only one pot size to avoid a large volume of slow-drying soil.
Variegated English Ivy Spacing
Space outdoor plants 6 to 10 feet apart to create a dense groundcover, and direct the runners within a defined bed. An 8- to 10-inch hanging basket suits one young plant, while a 12-inch pot supports several stems; use a freely draining mix and rotate indoor containers every week or two.
Variegated English Ivy Companion Plants
Pair this vine with coleus and fuchsia in shaded containers because they appreciate filtered light and regular moisture, with the ivy trailing below their upright foliage. In contained outdoor beds, hostas and astilbe share its preference for gentle light and organic soil, though the ivy should be clipped away from their crowns.
