The outstanding foliage of Savannah Sunset™ Ninebark changes colors through the season, starting orange, shifting into yellow-green, then finishing in deep reds and maroons by fall. It matures a manageable 4–5 ft. tall and 3–4 ft. wide, demonstrating ninebark toughness without the oversized, sprawling look of older varieties. Compared with many purple-leaved ninebarks that stay one note all year, this one gives you a rolling color show from spring through autumn. We’ve had the best results using it as the “color engine” in a sunny bed where the leaf shifts are easy to notice.

Also known as Physocarpus opulifolius ‘LP1’, this North American native selection was chosen for compact growth and standout foliage. Flat clusters of small, pale blooms show up in late spring, drawing bees and other pollinators. The shrub’s upright habit works for low hedging, foundation layers, or repeat plantings along a fence line without constant pruning. Once established, it handles real-world conditions well, including cold winters and typical garden soils, as long as drainage is decent.

Savannah Sunset™ Ninebark Care

Plant Savannah Sunset™ in full sun for the strongest orange-to-red color progression and the tightest habit. Soil can be average to fertile, but it should drain well, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid chronically wet spots that stay saturated, especially in winter.

Water deeply after planting and keep it on a steady schedule during the first 6 weeks. Afterward, switch to soaking only when the soil a few inches down feels dry. A spring feeding with a balanced slow-release fertilizer is plenty if your soil is lean, and compost as a top-dress works just as well in established beds. Savannah Sunset™ Ninebark is deciduous, so leaves drop in fall after their deep red finish.

Prune right after flowering to shape and to keep the plant dense, taking back up to about one-third of the stems if needed. Every few years, remove a couple of the oldest branches at the base to refresh the shrub and keep the center from getting twiggy. Skip late-season pruning, since new growth pushed too late can be more vulnerable going into winter.

Savannah Sunset™ Ninebark Spacing

Space plants about 4 feet apart for a solid, full look without crowding. In containers, choose a 20–24 inch pot so the root zone doesn’t dry too fast in summer and the plant stays stable in wind.

In the landscape, plant Savannah Sunset™ with elderberry, sneezeweed, and red hot poker for a mix of contrasting foliage and bloom color. In pots, pair it with petunias and sweet potato vines to echo the warm leaf tones and keep the display going around the base.
