With Prairie Winds® October Sky Switch Grass, the rosy-purple seedheads are the main event, showing more purple than many similar switchgrasses once late summer hits. It stays narrow, upright, and sturdy right into fall, topping out around 54–60 inches tall and 24–30 inches wide. Unlike many taller grasses that open up or slump by September, this one holds its shape when the plumes arrive. We’ve found it most striking planted where you can catch the seedheads at eye level—along a drive or behind a patio bed.
Panicum virgatum ‘October Sky’ is a warm-season, North American native that starts later in spring and then accelerates once heat settles in. Blue-green leaves stay crisp through summer, while the airy panicles bring fall color and often persist into winter for structure and wildlife value. It tolerates drought once established, handles wind and salt well, and stabilizes slopes or erosion-prone areas where you still want ornamental payoff. Use it in masses for a soft screen, as a specimen where the plumes can be appreciated up close, or near water features and rain-garden edges since switchgrass can handle periodic wet spells.
Prairie Winds® October Sky Switch Grass Care
Plant October Sky in full sun for the strongest stems and best plume color. It adapts to sand through clay, but it performs best in average soil with good drainage and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (about 6.0–7.0). If you’re in heavy clay, mix in organic matter to improve drainage and avoid planting where water pools.
Water regularly the first growing season and then switch to deep soakings when the soil is mostly dry a few inches down. Once established, too much irrigation can make growth softer and more likely to lean, especially in richer soils. Fertilizer is rarely needed; if growth seems weak, a small amount of all-purpose fertilizer in spring is sufficient.
Leave the foliage standing through winter for texture and shelter. Cut it back to about 3–4 inches in late winter before new shoots emerge. If the clump gets dense after a few years, divide in spring as it starts growing to keep it vigorous and upright. Avoid heavy shade, since reduced sun loosens the plant’s tight form.
Prairie Winds® October Sky Switch Grass Spacing
Space plants 24–30 inches apart for distinct, upright clumps, or closer to 24 inches if you’re building a fuller mass planting. In containers, treat it as a thriller and use a large, stable pot at least 20 inches wide so wind doesn’t tip it and roots have room to run.
In the landscape, pair it with agastache and black-eyed Susans for a long-blooming, sun-first mix that doesn’t crowd the base. In containers, combine it with verbena for spill and zinnia for punchy seasonal color that can handle the same sun and watering schedule.
