The Narrow Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Fastigiata') is a striking evergreen conifer with a tall, columnar form and eye-catching blue-green needles. Unlike the broadly spreading species, this fastigiate cultivar maintains a slim, upright silhouette, typically reaching 20 to 25 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide at maturity. Its steeply ascending branches are densely clothed in silvery-blue needles that provide year-round color and texture. Our landscapers often use this cedar when the design calls for an evergreen in a smaller yard or tighter landscape space.
The Narrow Atlas Cedar is a low-maintenance, long-lived conifer that performs well in a wide range of landscape settings. It is drought tolerant once established, resistant to most pests and diseases, and tolerates heat and air pollution. Its narrow footprint makes it well suited for tighter spaces where a bold, evergreen presence is needed without giving up excessive width. It works beautifully flanking entryways, anchoring island beds, or adding structure to a conifer garden.
Narrow Atlas Cedar Care
Plant Narrow Atlas Cedar in a location that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. It adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, but does not tolerate standing water or poorly drained conditions. Neutral to slightly acidic soil is ideal. Choose your planting site carefully, as this tree is difficult to transplant once established and should not be moved.
Plant in early spring or fall when temperatures are moderate, and water regularly during the first two to three years until the tree is fully established. Once mature, this cedar is drought tolerant and requires little supplemental irrigation. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support steady growth.
The Narrow Atlas Cedar requires minimal pruning once established. Remove any dead, broken, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring. Tip pruning young plants can help encourage a denser habit. Avoid heavy pruning, as cedars do not respond well to aggressive cuts.
Narrow Atlas Cedar Spacing
Space Narrow Atlas Cedar trees 10 to 15 feet apart when planting in groups or along a property line. This tree performs best in open, sunny areas with good air circulation and some protection from strong winds, which can damage branches. Plant at least 10 to 12 feet from buildings, walls, or other structures to allow room for its mature spread. This tree can be potted temporarily in a container with a sturdy base, at least 14" wide, but it will perform best if transplanted to the ground within its first 5 years.
