Growing Zones
Hino-Crimson Azalea is a relatively small rhododendron that explodes with crimson color each spring. Showy, single flowers appear all over the shrub. The crimson red blooms amass on a low-growing plant with small green leaves. The semi-evergreen shrub keeps its leaves in winter and drops the old leaves just as it forms new ones, so it's nearly year-round color makes this a perfect plant to feature in the landscape or line up as a border or hedge.
Growing to about 2 to 4 feet tall, Hino-Crimson Azalea is a pretty garden bed border plant or colorful hedge or mass planting. It reaches about 3 to 5 feet wide with moderate growth. Its shade tolerance also makes this and other rhododendrons good choices for woodland landscapes, where the crimson flowers add spring interest under tree canopies. Hino-Crimson also is excellent in Asian gardens. The shrub grows well in zones 6 through 9.
Hino-Crimson Azalea Care
Plant Hino-Crimson Azalea in partial shade and where it receives some protection from high winds. The plant performs best with morning sun and afternoon shade or growing under the dappled or filtered shade of trees. Make sure the soil is rich with organic matter, slightly acidic, and drains well, and add a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant. Water Hino-Crimson regularly; you should not need to fertilize the shrub.
Hino-Crimson Azalea Spacing
For a pretty foundation hedge along the front of your home, group several Hino-Crimson Azaleas about 4 feet apart from center to center.
