Happy Returns Daylily covers sunny borders with clear lemon-yellow flowers from early summer into the cooler days of fall. Hemerocallis 'Happy Returns' grows about 12 to 18 inches tall, with fragrant 3 to 3.5 inch blooms held above deep green, arching foliage. The flowers are slightly larger and lighter yellow than its Stella de Oro parentage, giving the plant a bright, cheerful look. We recommend it along walkways and front borders where the repeat bloom can be enjoyed best.
This popular reblooming daylily opens each flower for about one day, then follows with fresh buds through a long season. Happy Returns Daylily is heat tolerant, rabbit resistant, salt tolerant, and adaptable to urban sites, slopes, and poorer soils once settled in. Blooming may slow during the hottest part of summer, then pick up again as temperatures ease. Plant it in edging, mass plantings, containers, cottage gardens, erosion-control areas, perennial borders, and small spaces that need reliable yellow flowers.
Happy Returns Daylily Care
Plant Happy Returns Daylily in full sun to partial shade, with full sun best for the strongest bloom production. It grows in clay, loam, sandy soil, average soil, poor soil, and fertile soil when drainage is good. Acidic, neutral, or alkaline pH is acceptable, though deep loam with organic matter results in the fullest clumps.
During the first season, provide moderate moisture while the roots establish. Mature plants tolerate mild drought, but deep watering during hot rainless stretches helps keep foliage attractive and supports repeat bloom. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release perennial fertilizer, or topdress with compost if the soil is lean. In cold climates, the foliage dies back in winter and returns from the crown in spring.
Deadhead spent flowers to keep the clump clean, then remove finished flower scapes once all buds have opened. Cut old foliage back in late fall after frost or in early spring before new leaves rise. Divide crowded clumps every 3 to 4 years in spring or fall, selecting divisions with several fans for stronger replanting.
Happy Returns Daylily Spacing
Space Happy Returns Daylily 18 to 24 inches apart for edging, mass plantings, and broad sweeps of yellow bloom. Use 24 inches between plants in mixed perennial beds so the clumps can expand without crowding. For containers, choose a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide with drainage holes, and fill with a loose potting mix.
In sunny borders, combine Happy Returns Daylily with catmint and salvia, which add cooler flower tones and a longer pollinator season around the yellow blooms. Use tickseed to repeat the sunny color and match the daylily’s preference for open light and drained soil. In containers, use geraniums or marigold around the edge for warm-season color that handles the same bright exposure.
