Growing Zones

The Granny Louise Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Granny Louise') is a dwarf evergreen conifer prized for its striking narrow, columnar habit and attractive blue-green needle foliage. Native to the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, this slow-growing cultivar reaches just 1 to 5 feet tall after 10 years, eventually maturing into a slender sentinel of around 25 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Its short, dense needles grow in spiraling clusters along the branches, giving the tree a refined, tufted texture year-round. Granny Louise makes an excellent specimen or focal point in gardens of any size and works beautifully as a vertical accent in mixed borders or foundation plantings.

This cultivar is not commonly found in the nursery trade, making it a distinctive choice for collectors and gardeners looking for something truly unique. Like other Atlas Cedars, Granny Louise is heat and drought tolerant once established, and it is resistant to verticillium wilt. Its tight, upright form requires little to no pruning to maintain its shape. This is a low-maintenance tree that delivers year-round interest through its evergreen blue-green foliage and elegant columnar silhouette.

Granny Louise Atlas Cedar Care

Plant your Granny Louise Atlas Cedar in a location that receives full sun for best results. It thrives in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic loam but is adaptable to sandy and clay soils as long as drainage is adequate. Water regularly after planting to help the tree establish, and once settled, it becomes quite drought tolerant and requires only occasional watering during extended dry periods. Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Granny Louise requires very little pruning thanks to its naturally tidy, narrow form. In early spring, remove any dead or damaged branches to keep the tree healthy and looking its best. Avoid heavy pruning, as Atlas Cedars develop their attractive shape without much intervention. Monitor periodically for common conifer pests such as scale insects, spider mites, and aphids, and treat promptly if any infestations appear.

Granny Louise Atlas Cedar Spacing

Due to its dwarf, columnar habit, Granny Louise can be planted closer to structures and other plants than most trees — allow at least 4 to 6 feet between plants and keep it a safe distance from buildings to allow for its mature spread. It is an ideal choice for narrow spaces, formal garden designs, or as a vertical accent in a mixed border or container planting. Plant in a location protected from heavy winds, which can cause branch breakage, and avoid low-lying spots with poor drainage.
