Growing Zones
Golden Ticket Privet (Ligustrum x vicaryi ‘NCLX1’) wakes up in spring with brilliant yellow leaves that mature to rich chartreuse, bringing a glowing accent to beds and borders all season. The shrub tops out at only 4–6 feet in both height and width, so it slips easily into smaller landscapes while still creating a lush, full hedge. Fragrant white flower clusters arrive in late spring, adding a touch of perfume and drawing pollinators. Because this introduction is sterile, you get all the color and screening power of traditional privet without unwanted seedlings popping up around the yard.
Developed from hardy Asian species, Golden Ticket holds up well in heat, occasional drought, and urban pollution, yet deer typically pass it by. Its tidy, mounded habit lends itself to formal or relaxed designs: flank an entry walk, soften a foundation, edge a patio, or mass several for a quick privacy screen. The golden foliage partners beautifully with purple-leaved shrubs or deep‑green conifers, and clipped stems add brightness to cut‑flower arrangements. Low maintenance and adaptable, it is a smart choice where you want reliable structure without fuss.
Golden Ticket® Privet Care
Plant in full sun for the most intense leaf color; part sun is tolerated, though foliage will be more chartreuse than gold. Any well‑drained soil, from sandy loam to clay, is acceptable, and the shrub handles soil pH on either side of neutral. Water regularly the first growing season, then provide moisture only during extended dry spells. A single application of balanced, slow‑release fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient for the year.
Light shaping can be done after the spring bloom; remove long shoots or tip‑prune to keep the outline even. Older branches may be thinned out at ground level every few years to prompt fresh growth inside the plant. In containers, use a pot at least 18 inches in diameter and remember that watering needs will be higher than in‑ground plantings, especially during summer heat.
Golden Ticket® Privet Spacing
For a seamless hedge or mass planting, space plants 4 feet apart on center; increase to 6 feet if you prefer individual specimens to retain their rounded shape. As a single accent or in a mixed border, allow at least 4 feet of width so nearby plants aren’t crowded. When potting a young shrub, start with a container that is several inches wider than the root ball to encourage steady, even growth.
