Forged in Fire False Sunflower stands out for its smoky, burnt-orange centers that open darkest at first, then soften as each semi-double flower matures. Heliopsis helianthoides 'Forged in Fire' reaches about 32 to 36 inches tall and wide, perfect for the middle of a sunny border without turning into a towering backdrop plant. The semi-double form helps each bloom last longer and still leaves room for bees and butterflies. We like that Forged in Fire combines the toughness of false sunflower with richer coloring and a denser, more refined habit.
This North American native perennial forms a sturdy, upright clump with dark green foliage that shows notably good mildew resistance through the heat of summer. It handles drought once established and keeps blooming from midsummer into late summer. The substantial stems are great for cutting and hold flowers well in a vase. The darker eye pattern gives it more depth than standard yellow heliopsis, especially when buds first open to a deep burgundy center. Use it to strengthen prairie-style plantings, add heat-toned color to a mixed border, or repeat it through a pollinator bed where the flower color shift will be most noticeable.
Forged in Fire False Sunflower Care
Plant in full sun for the strongest stems and best flower color, although false sunflower can handle part sun with somewhat lighter bloom. Grow it in average, well-drained soil with an acidic to neutral pH, and avoid overly rich ground that can make the plant looser and more likely to lean. Good drainage is especially important in winter, when cold, wet soil can shorten the life of the crown.
Water regularly during establishment, and then soak when the soil has dried a bit below the surface rather than keeping it constantly damp. Once rooted in, false sunflower tolerates dry spells well, and a light spring feeding with compost or a balanced fertilizer is usually plenty. This perennial dies back in fall, then returns from the crown when temperatures warm in spring.
Deadhead spent blooms to stretch the flowering season and reduce self-seeding, or leave some seedheads standing for late-season texture. If the clump grows in richer soil and starts to open up, a light trim in early summer can help keep it shorter and bushier. In exposed gardens, a winter mulch can help limit frost heaving during repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Forged in Fire False Sunflower Spacing
Space plants 32 to 36 inches apart so the clumps have room to branch and air can move through the foliage. For containers, use a pot at least 18 to 20 inches wide, where it can serve as the upright centerpiece with enough soil to support summer bloom.
Pair Forged in Fire False Sunflower with false indigo and hens & chicks for a dry, sunny planting that carries warm flower color through the season. In containers, combine it with verbena for trailing bloom and sweet potato vines to soften the rim below the upright stems.
