Forged by Fire™ Catchfly delivers a bold spring display with intense red flowers that glow against deep green foliage. This compact perennial reaches about 12 to 18 inches tall, making it easy to place where color needs to be sharp and controlled. The blooms appear in spring and arrive in generous numbers, creating a concentrated hit of color when many perennials are just waking up. Compared with older fire pink selections, this cultivar produces more flower stems and a denser overall habit. Silene virginica ‘Sil005’ USPP36247 is one of our favorite native perennials for adding early-season impact without sacrificing durability.
The plant forms a tidy, mounded clump that stays neat without constant attention. It is native to North America and well adapted to regional conditions, with good tolerance for heat, brief dry spells, and browsing pressure from deer. Pollinators flock to the crimson red flowers, especially hummingbirds and early-season bees. Use Forged by Fire™ Catchfly in borders, rock gardens, woodland edges with sun, or mixed containers where spring color matters.
Forged by Fire™ Silene Care
Plant Forged by Fire™ Catchfly in full sun to part sun, with at least a few hours of direct light each day for best flowering. Well-drained soil is essential, and the plant performs especially well in loamy or slightly sandy soils that do not stay wet. Neutral to slightly acidic soil is suitable, and heavy clay should be amended to improve drainage. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots; then reduce watering once established, as the plant handles moderate drought. A light application of compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring supports healthy growth and bloom production.
Remove spent flower stems after the main spring bloom to keep the plant tidy and encourage a fresh flush of foliage. Light deadheading may extend the display, though the primary bloom period remains spring-focused. In climates with mild winters, the foliage may persist as evergreen or semi-evergreen. Cut back damaged or tired growth in early spring before new growth emerges.
Forged by Fire™ Silene Spacing
Space Forged by Fire™ Catchfly about 12 inches apart in beds or mass plantings to allow each plant to develop its natural clumping form. This spacing creates a full look without crowding airflow around the foliage. For containers, choose a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide with excellent drainage. This size provides enough room for roots while keeping the plant proportionate to its compact habit.
