Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks is a rare red cobweb sempervivum. Sempervivum 'Urmina' grows about 3 inches tall and can spread up to 12 inches wide as chicks form around the hen. The foliage can show red, burgundy, green, chartreuse, bronze, and golden tones depending on light and season, with the silver hairs giving each rosette extra texture. We recommend growing several different types next to each other to create a tapestry of color and texture.
This Chick Charms® selection is a cold-hardy evergreen succulent with reliable spring offset production. Pink flowers may appear on mature rosettes in summer, and the blooming hen will fade afterward while younger chicks continue the colony. Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks is drought tolerant, deer resistant, rabbit resistant, pet safe, and best in dry winter conditions. Plant it in rock gardens, retaining walls, wall pockets, troughs, roof gardens, patio planters, dry borders, and low groundcover-style plantings.
Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks Care
Plant Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks in full sun to filtered sun, with light shade helpful during intense afternoon heat. It grows best in gritty, rocky, sandy, or lean soil with excellent drainage and an acidic to neutral pH. This plant should not sit in wet winter soil.
Water regularly during the first season when the soil dries out. Established in-ground plants do not need much supplemental water, though outdoor containers may need occasional deep soaking during hot, dry weather. Fertilizer is rarely needed, and too much nitrogen can reduce color and loosen the rosette form. Gravel top dressing helps keep the leaves dry at the soil line.
Remove dried lower leaves when they loosen from the rosette. After a mature hen flowers, cut away the spent bloom stalk and fading rosette once nearby chicks have started filling the gap. In rainy winter regions, grow Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks in raised gravel beds or containers that can be moved away from prolonged wet weather.
Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks Spacing
Space Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks 6 to 10 inches apart in rock gardens, wall plantings, and low succulent groups. Use wider spacing when you want each rosette cluster to expand with visible gravel around it. For containers, choose a shallow pot at least 6 to 8 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a gritty cactus or succulent mix.
In sunny gravel beds, grow Chick Charms® Cosmic Candy™ Hens & Chicks near beardtongue and blanket flowers, which add upright bloom and grow well in lean, well-drained soil. Bluebeard can sit farther back in a dry border, adding late-season flowers above the low succulent layer. In containers, include lantana, ornamental purslane, or annual vinca, keeping the hens and chicks highest and driest. Hens & chicks will also spread each year, although they are not invasive whatsoever.
