Sonic Bloom® Weigela
Spring Flowers. Then Blooms Keep Coming.
Sonic Bloom® weigelas turn the traditional spring-blooming shrub into a much longer garden show. A heavy first flush is followed by waves of trumpet-shaped flowers through summer and fall, with no deadheading required for rebloom.

Weigela That Comes Back for an Encore
Traditional weigela is loved for its spring flowers. Sonic Bloom® extends that display much further. These shrubs produce a heavy flush of trumpet-shaped flowers in spring, take a short rest, and then rebloom in waves through summer and fall. No deadheading is required to keep the show going.
Exceptional Rebloom
Sonic Bloom® was bred for repeat flowering. The spring display is followed by fresh rounds of blooms later in the growing season, extending color far beyond the usual weigela bloom period.
No Deadheading Needed
There is no need to remove every faded flower to encourage another round of blooms. Sonic Bloom® reblooms naturally, making the series a good fit for low-maintenance landscapes.
Made for Hummingbirds
Tubular flowers provide an inviting food source for hummingbirds and other pollinators. Weigela also tends to be passed over by deer, an added benefit for rural or wooded landscapes.

Sonic Bloom® weigelas share strong reblooming performance, but flower color, foliage, and mature size give each variety a different look. Punch offers the most compact habit, Wine™ adds dark foliage, Ghost® develops glowing golden foliage, and Pearl changes from white to pink as the flowers mature.

How Does Sonic Bloom® Rebloom?
The main flush arrives in spring on growth carried through winter. Once those flowers finish, the shrub produces fresh stems that can carry additional flowers.
After a short rest, new blooms appear in waves through summer and into fall. The plant does not need to be deadheaded or repeatedly cut back to make this happen.
Sonic Bloom® flowers on both old and new wood. That combination provides the heavy spring display plus the later rounds of flowers that make the series distinctive.
Sonic Bloom® Weigela Quick Facts
How to Care for Sonic Bloom® Weigela
Sonic Bloom® weigelas need little special treatment. Sunlight, drainage, and proper pruning timing have the greatest effect on flowering.
Give It Plenty of Sun
Plant Sonic Bloom® weigela in full sun for the heaviest flowering and densest growth. Light shade is tolerated, especially in hot climates, but fewer hours of direct sunlight can reduce the flower display.
Use Well-Drained Soil
Weigela adapts to many garden soils, including clay, as long as excess water can drain away. Avoid locations that remain saturated after rainfall.
Water Regularly at First
Keep newly planted shrubs consistently watered during establishment. Mature weigela handles short dry periods better, but supplemental water during extended heat or drought supports stronger growth and flowering.
Prune After the Spring Bloom
Sonic Bloom® does not require annual pruning. If shaping is needed, prune immediately after the first spring flower display. Avoid routinely cutting the shrub back in late winter because that removes old growth carrying spring flower buds.
Remove Older Stems as Needed
Mature shrubs can be refreshed by removing a few of the thickest, oldest stems near the base after spring flowering. This opens the plant and encourages fresh replacement growth.
Feed in Early Spring
If fertilizer is needed, apply a slow-release granular product formulated for flowering shrubs or woody plants in early spring. Follow the product label and avoid excessive feeding.
Where to Plant Sonic Bloom® Weigela
Flowering Hedges
Repeat several full-sized Sonic Bloom® shrubs for a long-blooming informal hedge along a property line, driveway, or garden bed.
Foundation Beds
Pink, Pure Pink, Red, Ghost, and Pearl provide substantial color near the house without reaching the size of many traditional screening shrubs.
Mixed Borders
Use Sonic Bloom® behind lower perennials and compact shrubs for a repeating backdrop of flowers from spring through fall.
Smaller Spaces
Sonic Bloom® Punch provides the most compact option in the collection and works well in smaller beds and mass plantings.
Foliage Contrast
Sonic Bloom Wine™ combines pink flowers with dark burgundy-toned foliage, and Sonic Bloom Ghost® emerges lime green and develops a glowing golden-yellow color as the season progresses.
Pollinator Gardens
Tubular flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, providing another reason to place these shrubs where you can enjoy the activity.
Mass Plantings
Repeating one variety creates a broad block of color and makes the later waves of rebloom especially noticeable.
Containers
More compact selections can grow in substantial outdoor containers with drainage, full sun, and consistent watering.
A Long Season for Hummingbirds & Pollinators
Weigela flowers have a tubular shape that is especially attractive to hummingbirds. Bees and butterflies also visit the flowers.
Because Sonic Bloom® produces additional waves of flowers after its spring display, the shrub can provide floral interest later in the growing season when traditional weigelas have finished blooming.

Sonic Bloom® Weigela FAQs
When should you prune Sonic Bloom weigela?
Prune Sonic Bloom® weigela immediately after its main spring flower display if shaping is needed. The shrub carries spring flowers on older stems, so heavy pruning in late winter or early spring can remove that first round of flower buds. Routine pruning is not required for rebloom.
How do you prune Sonic Bloom weigela?
Start by removing dead or damaged branches. To shape the shrub, lightly shorten stems immediately after the spring bloom. On an established plant, remove one to three of the oldest, thickest stems near the base when rejuvenation is needed. Avoid repeatedly shearing the shrub throughout summer.
How big do Sonic Bloom weigelas get?
Mature size depends on the variety. Most Sonic Bloom® weigelas grow about 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide. Sonic Bloom® Punch is more compact at roughly 2.5–4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Sonic Bloom Wine™ reaches about 4–5 feet tall but stays narrower at approximately 3–4 feet wide.
How fast does Sonic Bloom weigela grow?
Sonic Bloom® weigelas are vigorous shrubs with a moderate to fast growth rate under good conditions. Growth depends on the cultivar, climate, sunlight, soil, water, and age of the shrub. Full sun and regular watering during establishment help plants fill out more quickly.
How long does Sonic Bloom weigela bloom?
Sonic Bloom® weigela produces its heaviest flower display in spring. After a brief rest, it reblooms in waves through summer and can continue producing flowers into fall until frost. The number and intensity of later flower flushes vary with weather and growing conditions.
Does Sonic Bloom weigela need deadheading?
No. Deadheading is not required to make Sonic Bloom® weigela rebloom. The plant naturally produces additional flower flushes on new growth after the spring display.
How do you care for Sonic Bloom weigela?
Plant Sonic Bloom® weigela in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly while the shrub establishes, then provide supplemental water during prolonged dry periods. Fertilize lightly in early spring if needed. Pruning is optional and is best done immediately after the spring bloom.
Does Sonic Bloom weigela grow in full sun or shade?
Full sun produces the best flowering and densest growth. Sonic Bloom® weigela can tolerate some light shade, especially in warmer climates, but heavier shade generally results in fewer flowers.
Does Sonic Bloom weigela bloom on old or new wood?
Sonic Bloom® weigela flowers on both old and new wood. Older stems provide the main spring display. Fresh growth supports the later waves of summer and fall flowers.
Is Sonic Bloom weigela deer resistant?
Weigela is generally considered deer resistant, and several Sonic Bloom® varieties are specifically listed as deer resistant. No shrub is completely deer-proof, especially where food is scarce.
Where can I buy Sonic Bloom weigela?
Plant Addicts sells Sonic Bloom® Pink, Pure Pink, Red, Wine, Punch, and Pearl weigelas online. Available varieties and container sizes can change throughout the growing season, so check the products above for current availability.
