Yellowstone Stonecrop stands out for its electric chartreuse foliage that brightens garden spaces from early spring onward. As the season progresses, the needle-like leaves deepen to gold, followed by cheerful yellow flowers that rise just above the mat in early to midsummer. This low-growing perennial stays compact at just 3 to 6 inches tall while spreading 12 to 24 inches wide, making it far more useful as a groundcover than many taller sedums. We notice that sedum sexangulare ‘Yellowstone’ PP33174 offers stronger vigor and fuller foliage than older varieties like ‘Golddigger’. Its color holds well through heat and sun, giving it an edge in tough, exposed sites.
The plant forms a dense, creeping mat that suppresses weeds and knits together rocky or open soil. It is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and highly adaptable once established, with very few pest or disease issues. Native to Europe and parts of western Asia, this stonecrop has proven reliable across a wide range of climates. Yellowstone Stonecrop works especially well in rock gardens, border fronts, green roofs, gravel paths, and containers.
Yellowstone Stonecrop Care
Plant Yellowstone Stonecrop in full sun for the best foliage color and flowering, although it will tolerate light shade. Use well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil; low fertility soils are often preferred. Sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils are ideal, while heavy clay should be amended to improve drainage. Water regularly during establishment, and then reduce watering once roots are set, as the plant prefers dry to medium moisture levels. Fertilizer is rarely needed and can reduce the plant’s compact habit if overapplied.
Pruning needs are minimal. Trim back spent flower stems after bloom if a cleaner look is desired, although this is optional. In late fall or early spring, remove any winter-damaged or thinning growth to refresh the mat. In colder regions, foliage may bronze or partially die back but reliably regrows as temperatures warm.
Yellowstone Stonecrop Spacing
Space Yellowstone Stonecrop 12 to 24 inches apart, depending on how quickly you want the area to fill in. Closer spacing creates a fast, continuous groundcover, while wider spacing allows individual plants to spread naturally. For containers, use a shallow pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide with excellent drainage. This gives the plant room to trail and fill the container without staying overly wet.
