Growing Zones
Meet the Wonderful Pomegranate Tree, a compact fruiting standout with reliably large, red fruit. It grows 8–12 foot tall, 6–8 foot wide with a naturally rounded habit. Orange-red blooms show up in warm weather, maturing into big fruits that color up for a September to October harvest. The arils taste sweet-tart and press into excellent juice. Compared with less proven pomegranate selections, this one produces consistently in heat and doesn’t demand perfect soil as long as it drains. We've found Punica granatum ‘Wonderful’ produces more flavorful and heavier crops in baking sun.
Wonderful Pomegranate Tree Care
Plant Wonderful Pomegranate Tree in early spring after the ground is workable, or in early fall in warm zones so roots can settle before winter. Space trees 15–20 feet apart if you’re letting them reach full size. Provide full sun and well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH around 5.5–6.5. Avoid low spots that stay wet. Prune in late winter to remove suckers and shape it as a multi-stem shrub or a small-trunk tree, and thin crowded interior twigs so air moves through.
Growing Wonderful Pomegranate Tree
Expect fruiting in about 2–3 years, with harvest typically 150–210 days after bloom depending on your climate and heat. It only needs about 150–200 chill hours, but the best fruit set and sweetness require long, hot summers. Start with a nursery-grown plant, keep weeds and grass pulled back from the root zone, and let the topsoil dry slightly between deep waterings once established.
Growing Wonderful Pomegranate Tree in Containers
Use a 20–30 gallon container (at least 18–24 inches wide) with fast drainage, and plan to size up every 2–3 years or root-prune and refresh the mix to keep it productive. In a pot it works as the thriller centerpiece and can be underplanted with thyme and alyssum to keep the base tidy without competing for water. In the garden, pair it with lavender and agapanthus for a dry-sun planting that matches its preference for drainage.
Watering Wonderful Pomegranate Tree
Water deeply during the first growing season. Shift to infrequent soakings once roots are established, letting the top few inches of soil dry between sessions. Leaf drop outside of normal fall timing can mean it’s too dry, while constantly soft soil and yellowing foliage point to overwatering or poor drainage.
Feeding Wonderful Pomegranate Tree
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, and add a light follow-up in early summer if growth is pale or sparse. Skip heavy nitrogen late in the season, since it can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
