Wildeve® English Shrub Rose carries distinctly quartered rosette blooms, stacked with petals, on long, arching branches. It matures around 4 ft. tall and about 5 ft. wide, creating a relaxed, romantic shape. The blush-pink flowers have a soft apricot glow, with outer petals paling toward cream, which looks more nuanced than many single-tone pink roses. We’ve found it’s especially rewarding near a sitting area because the light, fruity scent shows up most when you’re close.
This rose is botanically known as Rosa ‘AUSbonny’ and it was bred by David Austin for repeat flowering and that classic English rosette form. The shrub stays bushy and mounding as the season progresses, with flowers arriving in clusters and returning after you remove spent blooms. It handles a mixed border well because the arching canes mingle gracefully instead of sticking straight up and out. It also takes partial shade better than many roses, though bloom production is strongest with more sun.
Wildeve® English Shrub Rose Care
Plant Wildeve® in full sun to partial shade, with morning sun being ideal where summers run hot. Roses are happiest in fertile soil that holds moisture but drains well, and a slightly acidic pH around 6.0–6.5 helps keep foliage deep green. Good drainage matters more than soil type, so improve heavy ground with compost before planting.
Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone consistently damp for the first few weeks, then switch to soaking when the top couple inches of soil feel dry. Feed in early spring as new growth starts and again after the first main flush with a rose fertilizer or a slow-release balanced option. In winter it goes dormant and drops its leaves, then pushes fresh growth as temperatures warm.
In late winter or early spring, remove dead or twiggy stems and take out one or two of the oldest canes at the base to keep the plant renewing itself. Shorten the remaining canes by roughly one-third to maintain the mounded outline, then deadhead through the season to speed the next round of flowers. Where winters are harsh, a 2–3 inch mulch layer over the root area helps protect the crown.
Wildeve® English Shrub Rose Spacing
Space Wildeve® 4–5 feet apart so the arching branches can fill out without crowding, which also improves airflow. For a container, use a roomy 20–24 inch pot with drainage so it can build the cane length that makes the flowers look their best.
In the garden, weave it with astilbe and irises for a layered look that stays interesting when the rose pauses between flushes. In pots, tuck in calibrachoa or petunias to spill over the rim while the rose provides the structure.
Why It’s Called That
Wildeve®
This rose is named after the character Wildeve from Thomas Hardy's novel The Return of the Native.
