Watermelon Kisses™ Weigela delivers a long season of color with fuchsia, tubular flowers set against dense green foliage. The blooms begin in spring and return in waves through summer and early fall, giving this shrub more staying power than many traditional weigelas. Its naturally rounded form reaches about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, making it easy to site without constant shaping. The flower color reads bright from a distance and shows especially well along paths and patios. Watermelon Kisses™ is our go-to shrub for reliable flowering in a smaller space.
This deciduous shrub develops a full, branching habit that looks polished even outside peak bloom. The flowers have a light sweetness and are a steady draw for hummingbirds and bees. Once established, the plant handles short dry spells and tolerates deer pressure better than many flowering shrubs. Watermelon Kisses™ fits neatly into mixed borders, foundation plantings, low hedges, and large containers. It also works well planted in multiples, where repeated bursts of color create a strong visual rhythm.
Watermelon Kisses™ Weigela Care
Watermelon Kisses™ Weigela grows best in bright, open exposures where it receives plenty of direct light during the day. Garden soils that drain freely yet retain some moisture suit it well, especially loamy soils with organic matter and a soil pH between about 6.0 and 7.0. During the growing season, steady moisture supports repeat flowering, especially in warmer climates. A balanced fertilizer applied in early spring is usually sufficient for the year. Mulch helps protect the roots and reduces competition from weeds.
Flowering occurs mainly on old wood, so timing matters when pruning. After the main spring flush, selectively trim spent flowering stems to shape the plant and encourage fresh growth. Every few years, remove a few of the oldest branches at the base to keep the shrub vigorous. In colder regions, expect a short wait in spring before new growth appears, as weigela can leaf out later than some shrubs.
Watermelon Kisses™ Weigela Spacing
Space Watermelon Kisses™ Weigela about 3 feet apart when planting in rows or groupings so each shrub can develop its full rounded shape. This spacing works well for low hedges or mass plantings without crowding. For container use, choose a pot at least 18 to 20 inches wide to support long-term growth.
