Volcanica™ French Quarter Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides ‘Balvolfrenq’) puts on a show with foliage that transitions from bright green edges into deep burgundy and finishes with a bold pink-red center. Reaching 18–36 inches tall and up to 28 inches wide, it forms a dramatic mound of color, perfect for accenting your favorite annuals. Unlike many plants that fade in full sun, this coleus adapts well to sunny or partially shaded gardens while retaining its bright leaf tones. It also resists common garden threats like deer and rabbits, making it a standout choice for easy, colorful displays.

In addition to its intense color blend, this coleus features a compact, upright habit that works nicely in combination containers or along garden borders. With late-season flowering, you won’t have to worry about it setting seed too soon or losing its foliage appeal. Originally cultivated for both sun and shade tolerance, Volcanica™ French Quarter Coleus keeps its striking hues in a range of conditions. Ideal uses include mass plantings, edging beds, or brightening patios with a single showstopping container arrangement.

Volcanica™ French Quarter Coleus Care

Plant in moderately fertile, well-draining soil, and water regularly to maintain consistent moisture—allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. A balanced fertilizer applied every week or two supports steady, healthy growth. While tolerant of partial or full sun, providing some afternoon shade in hotter regions preserves leaf coloration. This coleus generally adapts to various pH levels but prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.

Routine pinching of new shoots encourages fuller growth and helps maintain its tidy form. Deadheading is rarely necessary since the plant’s main attraction is its foliage, but you can remove any flower spikes to direct energy back into leaf production. When growing in containers, ensure adequate drainage, and consider moving them to a sheltered spot during cooler weather. With minimal fuss, your Volcanica™ French Quarter Coleus will add season-long color wherever it’s placed.

Volcanica™ French Quarter Coleus Spacing

Allow at least 24 inches between plants in rows or mass plantings, giving each one ample room to spread. For single-specimen plantings or borders, provide at least 28 inches on all sides so the foliage can shine. A container diameter of 12–14 inches is generally sufficient for newly planted coleus, though you should upgrade to a slightly larger pot as the plant matures.
