Feature
The Philodendron tortum, also known as the fernleaf Philodendron, is a recent addition to this beloved genus of tropical houseplants. Its strappy, fern-like leaves grow to 12 inches when mature, giving the plant an almost palm-like appearance. Grow this Philodendron as a dense bush or train it on vertical supports to showcase its climbing ability. Its long leaves add unique texture to any indoor plant collection. This adaptable plant tolerates a wide range of light and humidity levels.
Best Locations For Growing Tortum Philodendron
The fernleaf Philodendron will grow in virtually any room of your home. Its smaller size makes it an excellent choice for tabletops or desks. This plant tolerates varying humidity levels, and will flourish in humid spaces like a bright bathroom or kitchen. However, keep it out of reach of children and pets, as all parts of the Philodendron are toxic.
Tortum Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
For optimal growth, place your Tortum in medium to bright indirect light. Ideal locations include east or north-facing windows. Alternatively, position your plant across the room or to the side of a south-facing window to protect the foliage from direct sunlight, which can fade and scorch the foliage.
Tortum Philodendron Care
Use a pot with adequate drainage filled with a potting mix that combines equal parts perlite and organic material. This lightweight mixture provides more air spaces and minimizes the risk of root compaction. Transplant only into a pot one or two sizes larger, as excessive potting soil can trap moisture around the roots.
Regularly prune side shoots to maintain a dense appearance, and use cuttings for propagation; rooting in water typically occurs within weeks.
Watering Tortum Philodendron
During the active growth period in spring and summer, check the soil weekly for watering. Allow the top 2-3 inches of potting mix to dry to prevent overwatering. In winter, when growth slows, water less frequently, checking every 10-14 days for moisture levels. Water before the soil starts to pull away from the sides of the container.
Feeding Tortum Philodendron
Fertilize your Tortum Philodendron with a balanced houseplant formula during spring and summer, when growth is vigorous. Quick-acting liquid fertilizers, such as seaweed or fish emulsion, are easy to dilute in water. Use deodorized blends designed for indoor plants and apply the dilution monthly in place of regular watering. Discontinue fertilization when daylight shortens in fall and winter.
