The Tenysu-kazu Variegated Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora 'Goldilocks') is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer valued for its striking two-toned needles and naturally artistic form. Soft, twisted needles display bright golden-yellow new growth in spring that gradually fades to blue-green with golden overtones by fall and silvery undertones that add further depth. This dwarf tree develops an informal, broad upright habit with multiple leaders and a sweeping, sculptural silhouette unlike most other conifers. At maturity it reaches up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, making it a standout specimen or accent plant for smaller landscapes and garden beds.
The Tenysu-kazu Japanese White Pine is ideally suited as a focal point in rock gardens, mixed conifer borders, and patio plantings. It is deer resistant and tolerates salt spray, making it a practical choice in a range of garden settings. This cultivar is also well suited to container growing and bonsai culture given its compact, slow growth of roughly 6 to 10 inches per year. Its year-round color and sculptural form provide lasting visual interest through every season.
Tenysu-kazu Variegated Japanese White Pine Care
Plant Tenysu-kazu Japanese White Pine in a location with full sun to partial shade, as partial shade helps bring out the richest golden color in the needles. It requires well-drained soil and will not tolerate soggy or waterlogged conditions. Water your tree regularly after planting until it is established, then reduce watering as the tree becomes drought tolerant with age. In spring, apply a balanced granular fertilizer before new growth emerges to support healthy development.
This pine requires very little pruning under normal conditions. You may remove any dead or damaged branches as needed, but the natural sweeping form of this tree is best left intact. Avoid heavy pruning, which can disrupt its distinctive multi-leader habit. This cultivar is noted for its generally low-maintenance nature once established in a suitable site.
Tenysu-kazu Variegated Japanese White Pine Spacing
Space Tenysu-kazu Japanese White Pine trees at least 6 feet apart to accommodate their mature spread and allow for good air circulation. This compact tree works well as a standalone specimen near patios, entries, or mixed borders where its color and form can be appreciated up close. Plant it away from areas prone to standing water, and choose a spot protected from harsh, drying winds. Containers with at least a 20-inch diameter are suitable for patio or deck placements.
