Soul Mate™ Reblooming Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hokomasoma’ USPPAF, CPBRAF) brings season-long color to small gardens with full mophead blooms that return again and again from late spring through fall. In neutral soil, flowers open in clear pink tones; in more acidic soil, they deepen to mauve or blue-lavender. This compact bigleaf hydrangea matures at just 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, making it easy to squeeze into small spaces. In our own trial beds, it has proven dependable for repeat bloom, even after light winter dieback.
Soul Mate™ is deciduous, with fresh green foliage that frames each round flower head. Like other Hydrangea macrophylla types, it flowers on both old and new growth, accounting for its rebloom. It is heat tolerant for a bigleaf hydrangea and hardy in Zones 5 through 9. The blooms are long lasting on the plant and lovely in fresh or dried arrangements. Use it in foundation plantings, cottage gardens, shaded courtyard beds, or low hedges. It also performs well in decorative containers where soil pH can be managed for desired flower color.
Soul Mate™ Reblooming Hydrangea Care
Plant in a site with morning sun and afternoon shade, or bright filtered light. In hotter regions, protection from intense late-day sun helps preserve foliage quality. Provide moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, with a pH between 5.2 and 6.5 for blue-mauve tones or closer to neutral for pink flowers. Keep the root zone consistently moist, especially during summer heat, but avoid saturated soil. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs; a light second application in early summer can support continued bloom.
Remove spent flower heads by cutting back to the first set of strong buds. Avoid heavy pruning, since this variety sets some buds on existing stems. In early spring, thin out dead or winter-damaged wood to maintain shape and airflow. In colder climates, apply mulch in late fall to buffer roots from freeze-thaw cycles.
Soul Mate™ Reblooming Hydrangea Spacing
Space plants about 2 feet apart for a dense border or low flowering hedge. Allow a bit more room if planting among mixed shrubs so each plant keeps its rounded form. For containers, select a pot at least 16 to 20 inches wide with drainage holes. Combine with shade-tolerant companions such as coral bells, compact ferns, or trailing ivy to soften the rim and highlight the changing bloom color.
