Feature
The Seersucker Geogenanthus is a rare houseplant with lovely variegated foliage. The ovate leaves slightly curl from stem to tip and feature a rippled or puckered texture. Alternating light and dark green stripes run the length of each leaf with silvery green accents along the veining. The reverse side of the foliage is a deep purple.
The common name comes from the foliage’s resemblance to seersucker fabric. These are compact plants with a spreading growth habit. Botanically known as Geogenanthus poeppigii, this delightful specimen is often referred to simply as the Seersucker Plant.
Best Locations For Growing Seersucker Geogenanthus
The striped and rippled leaves of the Seersucker Geogenanthus stand out in any area of a home. Humidity is critical for this plant, so a sunroom, kitchen, or steamy bathroom may be the best location, or you can use a humidifier or pebble tray to make any spot a good fit. The reaching stems look spectacular in a hanging basket or perched on a shelf. Geogenanthus poeppigii is not poisonous or toxic, making it safe to have around young children or pets.
Seersucker Geogenanthus Sunlight Requirements
These plants naturally grow in the understory, so they need bright indirect sunlight in your home. Indirect light is best because the sun’s direct rays are too harsh and may burn the leaves or fade the color. The plant will drop leaves when the light is too low. Place it several feet away from a south-facing window or near an east- or west-facing window. Seersucker Geogenanthus grows slowly, so bright light will help them reach their full potential.
Seersucker Geogenanthus Care
Routinely inspect the leaves to gauge the plant's health. Look for signs of overwatering, low humidity, or inadequate sunlight. Prune dead or damaged leaves as they appear and change the care you provide if necessary.
Repotting is the perfect time to upgrade to a bigger container so the roots can spread into fresh soil. Repot when the roots grow through the holes in the pot. Select a pot that measures one to two inches larger and has drainage. Use a rich, moist, well-drained potting mix.
Watering Seersucker Geogenanthus
Seersucker Plants have high water requirements. They like damp conditions, but soggy soil is harmful. Water the Seersucker Plant when the top inch of potting soil is dry. Remove runoff water from the tray or cover pot to protect the roots from rot.
Increased humidity keeps the leaves lush and dazzling. The Seersucker Geogenanthus flourishes in above-average humidity but can often live in average humidity. Dry patches along the edges of the leaves indicate the air is too dry.
Feeding Seersucker Geogenanthus
Fertilize your Seersucker Geogenanthus using balanced plant food every two to three weeks. Many plant owners prefer water-soluble fertilizer because it is easy to use and reduces the risk of fertilizer burn. Feed the Seersucker Geogenanthus during the spring and summer when the plant is growing. Do not fertilize the plant in the fall and winter when growth slows or stops.
