Royal Flush™ Camellia (Camellia x ‘GNC-CAM1’ PP30916) brings saturated rose-pink color to the quiet months of fall and early winter. Semi-double blooms, about 2.5–3 inches across, cover the plant just as most shrubs are winding down. In spring, new foliage emerges washed in yellow and green before settling into a deep, glossy evergreen canopy. Mature plants reach about 4–5 feet tall and wide, forming a dense, rounded silhouette that rarely needs shaping. We rely on Royal Flush™ in smaller foundation beds where we want dependable winter flowers without committing to a large camellia that outgrows its space.
This selection traces back to Camellia sasanqua heritage, prized for earlier bloom and improved sun tolerance compared to many japonica types. It has no noticeable fragrance, but its flower count more than compensates. The evergreen foliage holds up well through heat and humidity, and established plants show good drought tolerance. Deer tend to pass it by. Use it as a low hedge, a specimen near an entry, or privacy screen along a woodland edge. It also performs beautifully in containers for patios and shaded courtyards, especially in Asian-inspired, cottage, or classic Southern garden designs.
Royal Flush™ ShiShi Camellia Care
Plant in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, or in bright filtered light throughout the day. In hotter climates, protection from direct late-day sun helps prevent leaf scorch. Soil should be well-drained and rich in organic matter, with an acidic pH between 5.0 and 6.5 to support healthy foliage and strong flowering. Avoid areas that remain soggy, as camellias dislike wet feet. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots; once established, irrigate during extended dry spells. Feed in early spring with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants to maintain deep green leaves and reliable bud set.
Pruning is minimal. If shaping is needed, trim lightly after flowering finishes, since camellias set next season’s buds soon after bloom. Remove any dead or crossing branches to improve air flow. In colder parts of Zone 7, apply mulch over the root zone before winter to moderate soil temperature. Container-grown plants may need winter protection if temperatures drop below their hardiness range.
Royal Flush™ ShiShi Camellia Spacing
Space plants 3–4 feet apart when creating a solid hedge or mass planting. For individual specimens, allow 6–8 feet of room so the natural form can develop without crowding. When planting in a container, choose a pot at least 18–20 inches wide with excellent drainage.
In mixed containers, pair Royal Flush™ with acid-loving companions that enjoy similar light conditions. Consider underplanting with trailing ivy, dwarf mondo grass, or seasonal cool-weather violas for layered texture. Keep companion plants shallow-rooted and avoid overcrowding so the camellia remains the focal point.
