Plum Gorgeous™ Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinense ‘Plum Gorgeous’) brings deep plum foliage and bright pink fringe flowers together in one compact evergreen shrub. The rich purple leaves hold their color through the growing season, creating contrast long before the spring bloom begins. In mid-spring, tassel-like flowers cover the branches, often returning again in fall for a second show. Reaching about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, it fills space without overpowering nearby plantings. This is our go-to shrub for adding year-round color in Southern landscapes where clients want something bold but easy to manage.

Native to Asia, loropetalum has earned a strong reputation for heat tolerance and adaptability in Zones 7–9. Plum Gorgeous™ forms a dense, naturally rounded shape with minimal upkeep and responds well to light shaping. Deer typically pass it by, and once established it handles short dry periods with ease. Its evergreen foliage makes it valuable for foundation plantings, low hedges, mixed borders, and privacy screens. It also performs well in large decorative containers where the foliage color anchors seasonal plantings.

Plum Gorgeous™ Loropetalum Care

Plant Plum Gorgeous™ in full sun to part sun for the richest foliage color and best flowering. It prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and a pH between 5.5 and 6.5; alkaline conditions may lead to leaf yellowing. Water consistently during the first growing season to establish roots, then irrigate during extended dry spells. Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. A layer of mulch helps moderate soil temperature and retain moisture, especially during summer heat.

Prune after the main spring bloom to shape or reduce size, as flowers form on older wood. Light trimming can encourage a fuller habit, and occasional thinning of interior branches improves air flow. Avoid heavy pruning in late fall, which may reduce the next season’s bloom. In colder parts of its range, protect from harsh winter winds to prevent leaf damage.

Plum Gorgeous™ Loropetalum Spacing

Space plants about 4 feet apart for hedges or mass plantings so they knit together into a solid row. For individual specimens, allow 5 feet between shrubs to showcase their natural form. In containers, choose a pot at least 22 to 24 inches wide with excellent drainage. Pair it with chartreuse sweet potato vine for contrast, trailing blue lobelia for seasonal color, or silver-foliaged plants like dusty miller to highlight the dark leaves.
