Paul's Select Blue Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Paul's Select') is a compact, slow-growing evergreen known for its striking steel-blue needles and dense, conical form. It offers year-round color and structure in the landscape and makes a reliable focal point or specimen planting. At maturity, this spruce reaches 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, a manageable size for most residential yards. Its tidy, symmetrical shape requires little intervention to maintain its ornamental appeal.
This cultivar of Norway Spruce is well-suited to a wide range of climates and thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 7. Its cold hardiness and adaptable nature make it a dependable performer in northern gardens where other ornamental conifers may struggle. The attractive blue foliage provides contrast against green plantings and provides the most impact when trees are grouped in mass plantings. It is also a good choice for use as an informal screen or windbreak over time.
Paul's Select Blue Norway Spruce Care
Grow Paul's Select Blue Norway Spruce in a location that receives full sun for best color and density. It adapts to a range of well-drained soil types and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water regularly after planting to help the tree establish, aiming for about two times per week, depending on rainfall, during the first growing season. Once established, this spruce is moderately drought tolerant and only needs supplemental watering during extended dry spells. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support steady growth, especially in poorer soils.
This spruce has a naturally neat form and requires minimal pruning under normal conditions. If shaping is desired, prune lightly in late spring after new growth, called candles, has emerged. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches at any time of year. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as Norway Spruce does not regenerate well from bare stems. A layer of mulch around the base will help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature throughout the season.
Paul's Select Blue Norway Spruce Spacing
Space Paul's Select Blue Norway Spruce at least 8 to 10 feet apart to allow for mature spread and good air circulation. Plant it away from structures, walkways, and overhead utility lines to give it room to develop its full, natural shape without obstruction. It can grow in a pot at least 20 inches in diameter for a few years, but will benefit from being transplanted to the landscape eventually.
