The Norfolk Island pine is the rare “little tree” houseplant that keeps a tidy, symmetrical shape. Indoors, it typically grows slowly to around 5–8 feet tall and about 2–3 feet wide. Its steady, tiered branching is why people use it as a living Christmas tree. Other names you may see include Norfolk pine, house pine, Australian pine, star pine, Polynesian pine, triangle tree, and living Christmas tree. We recommend this Araucaria heterophylla when you want a long-lived floor plant for a bright corner.
Best Locations For Growing Norfolk Island Pine
A bright living room corner, a home office near a window, or a bedroom with reliable daylight are all good homes for Norfolk Island pine. It also does well as a floor plant beside a sliding glass door. Keep it away from radiators and forced-air vents since dry, hot air leads to crispy branch tips. Norfolk Island pine is commonly listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs, but it’s still smart to prevent chewing since any plant material can cause stomach upset.
Norfolk Island Pine Sunlight Requirements
Give Norfolk Island pine bright, indirect light, and it will stay fuller and more evenly spaced. Too little light often leads to thin, stretched growth. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks so it doesn’t lean toward the window.
Norfolk Island Pine Care
Use a well-draining indoor potting mix and a container with a drain hole. Let this plant stay slightly snug in its pot for a while since it’s a slow grower. If you move it outdoors for summer, introduce it to brighter conditions gradually and bring it back inside well before chilly nights.
Watering Norfolk Island Pine
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, and let excess drain completely so the roots never sit in water. Dry indoor air can brown tips, so average-to-higher household humidity helps, especially during winter heating season.
Feeding Norfolk Island Pine
Feed lightly in spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer, about monthly; stop feeding in fall and winter when growth slows. Overfeeding is more likely to cause trouble than skipping a dose.
FAQs
Is it a true pine?
No. Despite the name and its classic silhouette, Norfolk Island Pine is a tropical conifer (Araucaria heterophylla), not a true pine. It’s well suited to indoor life with bright, indirect light and steady care.
Can I keep it indoors year-round?
Yes. It is commonly grown as a houseplant. Provide bright, indirect light, water when the top inch of soil is dry, and maintain typical room temperatures. A bit of added humidity in winter can help prevent browning tips.
How often should I water?
Check weekly and water when the top inch of mix feels dry. Pour off any excess from decorative cachepots so roots don’t sit in water. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.
Does it need pruning or frequent repotting?
Very little. Only remove dead tips or branches and avoid cutting the top leader. Repot every two to four years or when roots fill the pot, moving up just one size to keep growth manageable.
Is it safe for pets?
Norfolk Island Pine is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Even non-toxic plants can cause mild stomach upset if nibbled, so it’s still wise to place out of reach of curious pets.
Can I decorate it for the holidays?
Absolutely. Use lightweight ornaments and cool-touch LED string lights to avoid heat on the foliage, and keep the plant a few feet from heat vents or fireplaces to prevent drying.
