What does this mean?
This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller means tall focal point, Filler means mid-height mass, and Spiller means trailing over the edge.
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
New Gold Lantana produces dense clusters of golden-yellow flowers from late spring through fall, maintaining color through the hottest part of summer. This Lantana hybrid forms a low, spreading mound about 18 to 24 inches tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, with trailing stems that can extend farther in favorable climates. Deep green, aromatic foliage stays evergreen in frost-free climates, while colder regions can grow it as a warm-season annual or tender perennial. We appreciate how readily the stems spill over retaining walls and container rims, allowing the flowers to stay visible.
This hybrid between Lantana camara and Lantana montevidensis was selected for heavy flowering and greatly reduced seed production, with fruit forming only rarely. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds frequent the flower clusters. Established plants tolerate substantial heat, short dry periods, and moderate coastal exposure. Its spreading habit is useful across sunny slopes, rock gardens, broad border edges, and raised beds where low coverage is needed through summer.
New Gold Lantana Care
Plant New Gold Lantana in full sun, preferably with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for dense flowering. Average loam, sandy soil, or other garden soils are suitable when excess water drains freely. It adapts to a broad pH range from mildly acidic through mildly alkaline, with roughly 6.0 to 7.5 acceptable for most plantings.
Water deeply and regularly through the first growing season, allowing the upper soil layer to dry somewhat between soakings as roots become established. Mature landscape plants tolerate considerably drier conditions, but containers still need routine watering during hot weather. Apply a modest dose of balanced fertilizer in spring as active growth begins, avoiding heavy feeding that can favor leafy growth over flowers. In zones where winter cold damages the top growth, leave frost-affected stems in place until the threat of additional freezes has passed.
New Gold Lantana generally flowers continuously without routine deadheading because it produces very little fruit. If growth becomes open or flowering declines during midsummer, shear the stems back moderately to stimulate fresh branching and another flush of flowers. Plants can be cut back more substantially in early spring in warm climates. Wear gloves when handling cut stems, and keep plant material away from pets or livestock because lantana can be toxic if eaten.
New Gold Lantana Spacing
Space New Gold Lantana about 2 to 3 feet apart for broad groundcover plantings, allowing additional room if you would like its spreading stems to extend naturally. For containers, use a pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide for a single young plant, or a wider hanging basket so the trailing stems have room to cascade. Plant in a freely draining potting mix.
New Gold Lantana Companion Plants
Agastache and little bluestem make compatible landscape companions because all three handle strong sun, summer heat, and moderately dry soil after establishment. These companions add contrasting heights and foliage textures around the low lantana. In mixed containers, cuphea can provide an upright flowering companion and shares the same preference for warmth, abundant light, and good drainage.
