Natchez is a full-size white crape myrtle, providing months of summer bloom and standout bark after the flowers fade. Large panicles of pure white, soft-textured flowers sit above glossy green foliage, followed by orange-red fall color and smooth cinnamon-brown exfoliating bark. This Lagerstroemia x 'Natchez' can be a large shrub or small tree and can mature around 20–30 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide in warm climates. Our landscape designers value it for shade, screening, and summer flowers, all in one plant.
This deciduous crape myrtle is one of the better-known white-flowering selections, valued for strong mildew resistance and reliable performance in heat. It grows with a rounded to vase-shaped habit and can be trained as a multi-trunk tree or allowed to develop as a large privacy screen. The flowers attract pollinators, and the small seed capsules can persist into winter for added seasonal texture. Use it as a specimen in a front lawn, a frame for a driveway entrance, or a staggered row where the summer bloom and winter bark can both be seen.
Natchez Crape Myrtle Care
Plant Natchez Crape Myrtle in full sun, with 6 or more hours of direct light for the best flowering. It grows in clay, loam, sandy, or rich soils as long as drainage is good, and it prefers slightly acidic soil around pH 5.0–6.5. Avoid heavily shaded sites, since lower light reduces flowering and can keep foliage damp longer.
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to build a strong root system. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods when soil is dry several inches down or leaves begin to wilt in afternoon heat. Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. The tree will drop its leaves and enter dormancy in fall.
Prune in late winter to early spring before new growth begins, focusing on structure rather than hard cutting. For a multi-trunk form, keep 3–7 main trunks and remove suckers from the base as they appear. Thin crossing, damaged, or crowded branches to improve airflow and preserve the natural canopy.
Natchez Crape Myrtle Spacing
Space Natchez Crape Myrtle 15–20 feet from buildings, walks, and other large shrubs so the canopy can mature without constant pruning. For privacy screening, plant 12–15 feet apart in a staggered row, allowing room for the trunks and arching crown to develop. For containers, use only as a young temporary patio tree in a large 24–30 inch planter before moving it into the ground. Pair it in the landscape with boxwoods for evergreen structure, agapanthus for summer flowers at the base, and black-eyed Susans for a sunny, pollinator-friendly lower layer.
