Moody Blues® Sky Blue Spike Speedwell is a compact perennial prized for its long run of clear sky-blue flower spikes that begin in spring and continue through summer, often cycling until frost. Upright blooms rise neatly above tidy green foliage, giving borders a crisp vertical accent without taking up much space. At just 12 to 14 inches tall and wide, this Veronica fits where larger perennials overwhelm. It flowers the first year, sets buds quickly, and keeps going when many early bloomers fade. This is one of our top picks for long-lasting blue blooms in sunny beds and patio pots.
The plant forms a dense, clump-forming habit that stays clean through heat and light drought. It is deer resistant, pollinator friendly, and generally trouble-free, making it a low-maintenance choice for busy gardens. Native to garden breeding rather than the wild, it was selected for uniform growth and season-long performance. Use it in mass plantings for a ribbon of blue, tuck it into mixed borders, or feature it in containers where its scale feels just right.
Moody Blues® Sky Blue Veronica Care
Plant Moody Blues® Sky Blue Spike Speedwell in full sun for the strongest stems and best flowering, though it will tolerate light shade in hotter climates. Well-drained soil is essential; loamy soils are ideal, but the plant adapts to a wide pH range from slightly acidic to neutral. Water regularly during establishment, then switch to light, consistent watering, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between soakings. A balanced fertilizer applied in spring and again midseason supports continuous bloom without excess leafy growth. Good air circulation helps maintain clean foliage through summer.
Deadheading spent flower spikes keeps the plant looking fresh and often triggers new bloom cycles. After the main flush, trim back faded stems to just above healthy foliage rather than shearing the entire plant. In colder regions, leave the foliage in place over winter and cut back in early spring as new growth appears. If flowering slows, a light midsummer trim and watering usually brings it back into bloom.
Moody Blues® Sky Blue Veronica Spacing
Space plants 6 to 14 inches apart depending on how quickly you want beds to fill in. Closer spacing creates a solid block of color, while wider spacing highlights individual clumps in mixed borders. For containers, choose a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide with good drainage. This size allows enough root room to support continuous flowering through the growing season.
