Mighty® Chocolate Cherry Astilbe sends up dense cherry-red plumes on dark red stems that stay upright, up to 48" tall. The chocolate-maroon foliage is the other half of the story, staying ornamental even before bloom and providing contrast all season. This Astilbe chinensis hybrid is a later-blooming type that pushes color into mid to late summer. Our designers often use it for rich color at the back of a shady bed.

This is a herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter and returns in spring, often a little later than early shade staples. It performs best in organically rich, evenly moist soil and is one of the better choices for bright shade near downspouts or along a boggy edge where other perennials sulk. The plumes bring in pollinators, and the stems make strong cut flowers for summer arrangements. It’s also commonly listed as deer and rabbit resistant, which helps in woodland-adjacent gardens where browsing is routine.

Mighty® Chocolate Cherry Astilbe Care

Give Mighty® Chocolate Cherry Astilbe filtered sun to full shade; morning light with afternoon shade is ideal if possible. Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil that leans acidic, and work in compost at planting to keep the root zone cool and humus-rich. In heavier clay, raise the planting area slightly and mulch so water stays consistent without smothering the crown.

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially from late spring through bloom, and don’t let it dry out in heat waves. A spring feeding with a balanced fertilizer (or compost) is usually enough, with a light second feed after flowering if your soil is lean. In winter it goes dormant, and the spent plumes can be left for texture or cut down whenever you’re ready.

Deadhead by clipping finished plumes back to the first strong set of leaves if you prefer a cleaner look, or leave them to fade if you like late-season structure. In early spring, remove old stems and any tatty foliage before new growth emerges. Divide every 3–5 years in early spring, cutting through the woody crown so each division has visible buds.

Mighty® Chocolate Cherry Astilbe Spacing

Space plants about 36 inches apart to match its mature width and to keep airflow moving through a large clump. For containers, a big 20–24 inch pot gives the root system room and keeps moisture more stable than a small planter.

For companion planting, pair Mighty® Chocolate Cherry Astilbe with hellebore and ferns for layered evergreen-to-summer texture, and weave in bleeding heart for earlier flowers before the astilbe takes over. In containers, combine it with coleus for foliage contrast and wishbone flowers to spill and bloom in shade-friendly conditions.
