Peperomia ‘Metallica’ is a subtle beauty that boasts a dense growth habit, slightly cupped leaves, and dramatic coloring that demands to be seen up close. The deep burgundy leaves feature a shiny silver midrib and lighter-colored stems, creating an unusual contrast in both color and leaf shape within your houseplant collection.

This Peperomia is also a hardy perennial in USDA zones 10-11. Gardeners in cooler zones can place this dependable grower outside during the summer months and bring it indoors for the winter once nighttime temperatures drop to 50°F (10°C).

Best Locations For Growing Metallica Peperomia

This versatile Peperomia can thrive in almost any spot in your home. While higher humidity areas like kitchens and bathrooms are beneficial, it tolerates lower humidity well. Use a spray bottle or pebble tray filled with water to boost ambient humidity levels.

Smaller in stature than some tropical houseplants, Peperomia Metallica will reach a height of 8-10 inches and can trail, as its stems extend over 12 inches. Position the plant where its form can be appreciated up close, such as on a shelf, tabletop, or desk. Adding Peperomia Metallica to a mixed hanging basket will draw attention to the unique shape and coloring of the leaves. Terrarium gardeners particularly favor Peperomia for its slow growth rate and ease of care.

Metallica Peperomia Sunlight Requirements

Peperomias can thrive in a variety of lighting conditions. However, keep Metallica away from bright, direct sunlight, as it can scorch and fade the deep coloring of the leaves. Insufficient light can lead to small, spindly stems and leaves. Fortunately, the plant will fully recover when moved to a brighter location.

Metallica Peperomia Care

An all-purpose indoor potting mix works well for planting Peperomia. Use a container with ample drainage, and avoid letting the plant sit in a saucer filled with water unless it is placed on pebbles in a humidity tray. Clip back the ends of stems as needed to maintain a compact and dense shape. The cuttings can easily be rooted in a glass of water to expand your plant collection.

Watering Metallica Peperomia

Allow the top 1-2 inches of potting mix to dry between waterings. During the spring and summer months, this will likely be once a week. As growth slows in fall and winter, reduce watering to every 10-14 days to prevent overwatering. Average household humidity is acceptable, though higher humidity levels may influence the amount of watering needed.

Feeding Metallica Peperomia

Peperomia can be encouraged to bloom even when grown indoors. Feed the plant once a month between April and August with a blooming houseplant fertilizer, typically labeled for African violets or orchids.
