Feature

Mayan Mask Alocasia is all about foliage drama, with oversized green leaves traced in pale veins and backed in dark maroon-purple. It can reach 6 to 8 feet tall with a broad, robust presence. The ruffled leaf edges and upright habit give it more structure than many broad-leaved tropicals. Our designers place Mayan Mask where its dark leaf backs can catch the light and show off that two-tone effect.

This hybrid from Brian Williams forms a bold clump with strong dark green stems and a substantial, almost architectural habit as it matures. In warm climates it works beautifully as a tropical focal point in the ground, and in cooler areas it makes a stunning large porch or patio specimen that can be moved or protected. The hooded flowers are secondary to the foliage, which can hold a design together all season. Alocasia Mayan Mask PP24391 is especially useful in lush plantings where finer foliage would disappear, because the broad leaves add weight, texture, and a strong vertical push.

Mayan Mask Alocasia Care

Plant Mayan Mask Alocasia in full sun to part shade in rich, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It prefers soil that stays consistently moist and drains well, since this is not a plant for dry ground or compacted spots that bake hard. In the hottest areas, a little afternoon shade helps keep the foliage looking fresher.

Water often enough that the root zone never dries completely, especially during active summer growth. This plant is comfortable in evenly moist soil and can handle boggy conditions better than many tropicals, but stale water in containers should still be avoided. Feed regularly through the growing season with a balanced fertilizer so the foliage keeps its size and color, and expect growth to slow or rest when temperatures cool.

Remove damaged or weathered leaves by cutting the stem cleanly at the base rather than trimming part of the blade. In zone 8 gardens, a thick mulch layer can help protect the crown through winter. In colder areas container plants should be moved indoors before frost. Older plants may begin to form short trunks, which adds even more presence over time.

Mayan Mask Alocasia Spacing

Space Mayan Mask Alocasia about 3 to 5 feet apart so each plant has room to develop its full outline and show the undersides of the leaves. For containers, use a pot at least 20 to 24 inches wide with a rich moisture-retentive mix and enough weight to balance the top growth.

In the ground, pair Mayan Mask Alocasia with hostas and ferns for a lower shade layer with bold contrasting foliage. In containers, combine it with begonias and impatiens to soften the base and echo the deep tones in the leaves.
