Low Rider™ Blanket Flower delivers bold red blooms ringed in golden yellow from early summer straight through fall, all on a compact, ground-hugging plant. The flowers sit just above tidy gray-green foliage, creating strong color without height that overwhelms nearby plants. Mature plants stay around 8 to 10 inches tall and spread to about 12 inches wide, making them easy to tuck in just about anywhere. The long bloom window sets this selection apart, especially in hot, sunny gardens where many perennials fade early. Gaillardia aristata ‘Balgailrey113’ USPPAF has become one of our favorite choices for front-of-border color that doesn’t need babysitting.
This North American native forms a low, mounded clump that looks intentional even in informal plantings. The flowers have a light, earthy scent and draw steady traffic from bees and butterflies all season. Heat tolerance is excellent, and the plant holds its color through dry spells once settled in. Low Rider™ works well in mass plantings, edging sunny paths, gravel gardens, and patio containers where its compact habit really shines. It’s also a smart pick for family gardens thanks to its tough nature and pet-friendly profile.
Low Rider™ Gaillardia Care
Low Rider™ Blanket Flower performs best in open, sunny sites with soils that do not stay heavy or waterlogged. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal, especially those with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH in the 6.5–7.5 range. The plant prefers a soak-and-dry rhythm rather than constant moisture, which helps keep roots healthy. Lean soils are not a problem, and excessive fertilizer can actually reduce flowering, so a compost top-dressing in spring is plenty. During extended heat, occasional deep watering supports continued bloom.
Faded flowers can be clipped back to refresh the plant’s appearance and prompt new buds, though flowering continues even without regular cleanup. If the display slows during midsummer heat, a light trim can reset growth and encourage a strong late-season showing. Leave seed heads in place toward fall if you want to support birds. Cut plants back to the base in early spring once new growth begins.
Low Rider™ Gaillardia Spacing
Space Low Rider™ Blanket Flower about 12 inches apart to create a continuous ribbon of color without crowding. This spacing works well for borders, slopes, and mass plantings where coverage matters. Proper spacing helps each plant maintain its compact shape and steady flowering pace. For containers, choose pots at least 10 to 12 inches wide to give roots room without excess soil staying wet.
