Little Gem Dwarf Norway Spruce stays charmingly small, forming a dense, flat-topped globe even without pruning. Fresh spring growth opens in a lighter green, then settles into a deep, steady green that holds through winter. Little Gem Dwarf Norway Spruce stays compact to around 1–2 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, so it fits where full-size conifers would be impossible. Our landscape designers use it for year-round structure in tight spaces, with little upkeep needed.
Picea abies 'Little Gem' is a dwarf selection of Norway spruce with short needles packed tightly over a cushion-like framework. It performs best in cool-summer climates and appreciates good drainage, but once established it tolerates short dry spells surprisingly well. Use it in a rock garden where its flat crown can echo stone lines, or use it as a low layer between taller conifers to keep the planting from looking bare at ground level. It can also be trained as a small topiary, which is a fun way to add evergreen geometry near an entry.
Little Gem Dwarf Norway Spruce Care
Plant Little Gem Dwarf Norway Spruce in full sun to partial shade, with the brightest exposure giving the tightest habit. Aim for well-drained soil that leans slightly acidic, though it adapts as long as water doesn’t sit around the roots. Avoid wet, shady spots where airflow is poor.
Water deeply and regularly for the first couple of growing seasons, then shift to watering when the soil a few inches down feels dry. A light, slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring is plenty, and you can skip feeding in richer soils. It stays evergreen year-round, and can develop winter burn from wind and sun on frozen ground.
If you prune at all, do it by trimming only the soft new growth of the current season to preserve the natural bun shape. Remove any dead interior twigs in late winter or early spring to keep the plant clean and reduce pest hiding places. When used in a container, protect the pot in winter so the root ball doesn’t freeze solid for long stretches.
Little Gem Dwarf Norway Spruce Spacing
Space plants about 2–3 feet apart if you want distinct mounds, or a bit closer if you’re creating a low, repeating edge. In containers, use a pot at least 16–18 inches wide with excellent drainage so the root zone stays evenly moist, not saturated.
For companion planting, pair Little Gem with sedum for a dry-leaning rock garden mix and add coneflower to bring summer flowers above the evergreen dome. In mixed beds, it also looks sharp with spirea behind it for seasonal bloom and a different leaf texture, while the spruce serves as the year-round anchor. For a more layered evergreen look, plant false cypress a few feet back so the Little Gem becomes the front “button” in the composition.
