Ice Cream Banana Tree offers frosty-blue fruit with a creamy, vanilla-custard flavor that’s better fresh than anything shipped. It typically reaches 10–15 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide with broad lime-green leaves and a stout pseudostem that gives it a tougher, more wind-sturdy presence than many bananas. The bananas start blue-green, then turn pale yellow as they ripen. The fruit is best eaten fresh, frozen, or blended the day it’s ready. We’ve found Musa Blue Java makes a stunning patio plant, delivering an unmistakable tropical look.
Ice Cream Banana Tree Care
Plant Ice Cream Banana Tree after frost danger has passed, spacing clumps about 8–10 feet apart. Choose a spot with full sun to part shade where it’s sheltered from strong wind. Use rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist, with a pH around 5.5–7.0. Mound the planting site slightly if it holds water after rain. Trim away torn or browned leaves as needed, and after a stalk fruits, cut the spent stem down to about 30 inches once it begins drying so the next pup can take over.
Growing Ice Cream Banana Tree
In warm regions Ice Cream Banana Tree can fruit in about 18–24 months, but fruiting depends on the plant keeping enough healthy growth through winter to make a flower stalk. Keep 1–2 strong pups from the clump and remove extras so the plant’s energy stays focused. Start growing outdoors once nights are reliably above freezing, and in cooler areas treat it as a patio plant that comes inside before temperatures dip into the 40s for long stretches.
Growing Ice Cream Banana Tree in Containers
This banana is best grown in a container if you live in a cold climate. Use a 15–25 gallon pot with drainage holes and a chunky, well-draining mix that still holds moisture. Make the banana the “thriller” and plant the rim with impatiens and begonias for color that won’t compete heavily with the roots. Repot up one size when you see roots circling the pot or pushing from drainage holes, and rotate the container occasionally so the trunk stays upright.
Watering Ice Cream Banana Tree
Water often in heat, usually every 2–3 days in summer for containers, keeping soil consistently moist but never swampy. If the newest leaf unfurls smaller than usual or leaf edges begin to brown and curl, the plant is either too dry or not watered evenly.
Feeding Ice Cream Banana Tree
Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced organic fertilizer at about half the label rate, since bananas respond better to steady, lighter feeding than big doses. Stop feeding in winter when growth slows, then resume in spring to support bigger leaves, stronger stems, and better fruiting potential.
