Hollywood Juniper Tree is all about form, with naturally twisting upright branches that give it a sculptural look even in simple plantings. It keeps rich green evergreen foliage year-round and reaches roughly 15 to 20 feet tall by 6 to 10 feet wide. Because the branching turns and spirals on its own, this plant brings unique character to entries, gravel gardens, and sunny foundation beds. Our designers recommend Hollywood Juniper when a space needs privacy or structure with a more designed look.
Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka' is especially useful in coastal gardens, hot urban sites, and other exposed places where softer shrubs can struggle. It handles drought, salt, deer pressure, and poor soil better than many ornamental evergreens once established. Hollywood Juniper also fits a wide range of styles, from Mediterranean and desert-inspired landscapes to Asian garden layouts where the irregular silhouette feels right at home. Use one as a specimen near a gate or hardscape, or plant several with room to create a looser, interesting screen.
Hollywood Juniper Tree Care
Plant Hollywood Juniper Tree in full sun and well-drained soil for the strongest growth and best foliage color. It adapts to average, sandy, rocky, and even lean soils, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid planting in spots that stay wet after rain, since saturated soil can stress this juniper.
Water deeply on a regular schedule through the first growing season. Afterward, let the soil dry somewhat between soakings as the plant settles in. Established plants are quite drought tolerant, so extra water is mostly needed during long hot dry stretches. Feed lightly in early spring with a general evergreen fertilizer, and expect the plant to stay evergreen through winter without a dormant dieback period.
Pruning is best kept light so the natural twisting framework stays visible. Remove dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring, then shorten stray shoots only where you need to control width or guide the outline. In large containers, use a sharply drained potting mix and protect the root zone from standing winter moisture, which is often harder on junipers than cold itself.
Hollywood Juniper Tree Spacing
Space Hollywood Juniper Tree about 6 to 8 feet apart when planting for a screen, or give a single specimen enough open room to show off its mature shape. For containers, choose a substantial pot at least 20 to 24 inches wide, especially if the plant will be used near an entry or patio for several years.
Combine Hollywood Juniper with barberry, roses, and blanket flowers for contrast in shape and color, and low water needs. In containers, surround it with verbena and petunias to soften the base while letting the juniper remain the vertical focal point.
