The Hockersmith Linda Blue Spruce Tree Form (Picea pungens 'Hockersmith') is a striking ornamental evergreen grown as a standard, featuring a single upright trunk topped with a dense, rounded crown of silvery-blue foliage. This compact tree form reaches 5 to 6 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 4 feet at maturity and is well suited for smaller landscapes. The stiff, needle-like foliage holds its intense blue-silver color year round, providing consistent visual interest in every season. It works beautifully as a focal point in a mixed border, at an entryway, or in a large container on a patio or deck.
Like other blue spruces, this selection is cold hardy and adaptable to a range of conditions across much of the United States. Its tidy, upright form requires little corrective pruning, making it a low-maintenance choice for adding structure and color. The Hockersmith Linda is deer resistant and tolerates urban conditions well. It is an excellent choice for adding a formal or architectural element to the landscape.
Hockersmith Linda Blue Spruce Tree Form Care
Grow Hockersmith Linda Blue Spruce in full sun for the best foliage color and density. It performs well in most well-drained soil types and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the tree establish a strong root system. Once established, this spruce is moderately drought tolerant and needs supplemental watering only during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins to support healthy development.
This tree form requires minimal pruning to maintain its shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. If the grafted crown begins to grow unevenly, lightly trim the outer edges to preserve a balanced, rounded appearance. Avoid heavy pruning, as blue spruces do not reliably regenerate growth from old wood. Monitor the graft union at the base of the crown and remove any shoots that emerge from the rootstock below it.
Hockersmith Linda Blue Spruce Tree Form Spacing
Plant Hockersmith Linda Blue Spruce Tree Forms 4 to 6 feet apart when used in a grouping or along a walkway. This compact standard is well suited for container planting where a defined vertical accent is desired; use a pot at least 16 inches wide to start. Choose a location away from structures that could block sunlight or interfere with the crown as it develops.
