Growing Zones
The Granny Smith Apple Tree is the tart-apple workhorse that stays firm in pies and caramel apples, with a clean green skin that doesn’t turn to mush when baked. It typically matures around 12–15 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide, forming an upright, rounded canopy that fits a home orchard nicely. Harvest runs late season, often mid to late October, and the fruit stores for months when kept cold. We’ve found Granny Smith is the easy choice when you want a true cooking apple and you’d rather not gamble on a sweeter variety that goes soft.
Granny Smith Apple Tree Care
Plant in spring after the soil is workable or in early fall, spacing about 12–15 feet apart, with the graft union kept a couple inches above the soil line. Give it full sun (6+ hours) and well-drained soil. Granny Smith is adaptable but happiest in loam, with a pH around 6.0–7.0 and no standing water after rain. Prune in late winter during dormancy to remove dead wood and vigorous upright water sprouts. Open the center for airflow and easier spray coverage if you choose to protect fruit.
Growing Granny Smith Apple Tree
Expect fruit in roughly 2–5 years depending on care, with best production after the canopy fills in and you've established good scaffold branches. While you may see some fruit with one tree, crops are more consistent and heavier with a different apple variety nearby that blooms at the same time. Start young trees outdoors as soon as frost risk is past, and keep the root zone mulched (not touching the trunk) to steady moisture and reduce weed competition.
Growing Granny Smith Apple Tree in Containers
A young tree can be grown in a container for a few years with attentive watering. Use at least a 20–25 gallon pot and a fast-draining mix, and refresh the top few inches of soil each spring. In pots, treat Granny Smith as the “thriller” and edge the container with lobelia and petunias to keep the surface shaded and flowering through the season. In the ground, pair nearby plantings with agastache and speedwell to bring pollinators through spring bloom and keep the bed looking finished once fruit set begins.
Watering Granny Smith Apple Tree
Water deeply at planting and keep a steady weekly soak the first season. Increase watering frequency during heat waves so the root zone doesn’t swing from soggy to bone-dry. When the top 2 inches of soil are dry or new growth looks slightly limp in the afternoon, it’s time to water.
Feeding Granny Smith Apple Tree
Fertilize in late winter to early spring with a slow-release fruit-tree fertilizer or a balanced blend, and stop feeding by late summer so new shoots harden before cold weather. A light feeding program supports bloom, fruit sizing, and leaf health without encouraging excess leafy growth that can invite disease.
