The Gold Lace Juniper Tree Form, or Juniperus chinensis 'Gold Lace', is an ornamental evergreen trained into a standard tree shape with a rounded, lacy canopy. This compact grower reaches 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at maturity and is well suited for smaller landscapes and container plantings. Its feathery, fine-textured foliage displays bright golden-yellow color that holds well throughout the growing season and softens to golden-green in winter. The tree form habit makes it a strong focal point for entries, patios, and formal garden beds.
Gold Lace Juniper is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant once established. It is resistant to deer and tolerates a range of soil conditions, growing reliably in most landscapes across USDA zones 4 to 9. Its upright standard form pairs well with low-growing perennials or ornamental grasses planted at its base. This juniper is a year-round performer, offering consistent color and structure in every season.
Gold Lace Juniper Tree Form Care
Plant Gold Lace Juniper in full sun for the best foliage color and overall health. It adapts to most well-drained soil types, including sandy or clay-based soils, but does not tolerate standing water or consistently wet conditions.
Water newly planted trees regularly for the first growing season to help them establish a strong root system. Once established, this juniper is drought tolerant and typically needs water only during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth, though fertilizing needs are minimal.
Pruning requirements are light for this tree form, but some trimming will help maintain the clean, rounded canopy shape. Trim the canopy lightly in late spring or early summer after the flush of new growth. Remove any shoots that emerge along the trunk to preserve the standard tree form. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as junipers do not reliably regenerate from bare branches. A light shaping once or twice per year is all that is needed to keep Gold Lace looking its best.
Gold Lace Juniper Tree Form Spacing
Plant Gold Lace Juniper Tree Form at least 3 to 4 feet away from other plants to allow for mature canopy spread and good air circulation. This compact standard is an excellent choice for flanking entryways, lining pathways, or anchoring container arrangements on a deck or patio. When planting in containers, use a pot with a diameter of at least 18 to 24 inches to provide stability and adequate root space. Keep this plant away from low-lying or poorly drained areas where water tends to collect.
