Growing Zones
We point people to the Fuji Apple Tree for a sweet apple that stays crisp and stores well (a single harvest can carry you deep into winter). It reaches about 12–15 feet tall and wide (semi-dwarf), with pink-backed, white-faced spring blooms that show up in April. Fruit is typically large, firm, and red-skinned with a juicy, candy-sweet bite that holds up for fresh eating and baking. Fuji is perfect for growers looking to add a late-season apple to an orchard, as it requires a second apple tree to get dependable crops.
Fuji Apple Tree Care
Plant in early spring or fall in full sun (6+ hours), and set trees 10–15 feet apart so the canopy can dry quickly after rain. Aim for loamy, enriched soil that drains fast but holds moisture, with a slightly acidic pH around 6.0–6.5. Avoid heavy clay that stays wet. Prune during dormancy in late winter, removing dead wood and upright water sprouts, and thin crowded branches to improve airflow and reduce scab and mildew pressure.
Growing Fuji Apple Tree
Plan on about 3–5 years to fruit for many home plantings, with harvest usually around mid-October in much of its range. Fuji is not reliably self-fertile, so plant a different apple variety nearby with overlapping bloom to improve fruit set. If you’re starting your tree indoors as a potted young plant, move it outside after frost danger passes and keep it in full sun so new growth hardens properly.
Growing Fuji Apple Tree in Containers
A young Fuji can live in a large container for a few years, but it needs space and steady moisture. Start with a 20–25 gallon pot and size up as roots fill the container. Use the tree as the “thriller” and keep the surface planted with oregano and alyssum to shade the potting mix and bring in pollinators without competing too hard. In the landscape, add culinary sage and bee balm near the planting area to keep beneficial insects active through the season.
Watering Fuji Apple Tree
Water deeply at planting, and keep the root zone evenly moist the first year. Typically a deep soak once per week is sufficient, increasing frequency during hot stretches. When the top few inches dry and leaves lose their sheen or curl slightly, that’s your cue to water again.
Feeding Fuji Apple Tree
Feed in late winter to early spring with a slow-release fruit-tree fertilizer or a balanced blend, and stop heavy feeding by late summer so new growth can firm up before fall. A modest spring feeding supports bloom, leaf health, and fruit sizing without promoting a lot of soft, disease-prone shoots.
