Everbearing Strawberry keeps the berries coming in waves from late spring through fall, and is a smart pick for small spaces and busy snackers. Each plant stays low and tidy at about 8–10 inches tall and 12 inches wide. It’s a better choice than many June-bearing types when you want steady picking for lunches, desserts, and freezing a handful at a time. We grow Everbearing Strawberry where it gets morning-to-midday sun and consistent moisture to keep the fruit firm and sweet.
Everbearing Strawberry Care
Plant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, setting the crown right at soil level and spacing plants about 12 inches apart. Give full sun (6–8 hours) and rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH around 5.5–6.5. Mulch the base with straw or shredded leaves to keep fruit clean and roots cool. Pinch off runners through the season if you want bigger harvests from the original plants, and remove tired or yellowing leaves to improve airflow and reduce disease.
Growing Everbearing Strawberry
Fruit will appear about 30–40 days after flowering; the plant then cycles back into bloom and repeats, especially when temperatures stay moderate. These plants don’t need chill hours like fruit trees, but they do benefit from winter protection in colder parts of their range, since the crowns can heave in freeze-thaw cycles. Start them outdoors as soon as nights are consistently above freezing, and plan to refresh your patch every 2–3 years for the best berry size and production.
Growing Everbearing Strawberry in Containers
A 12-inch pot works for a single plant, while a wider bowl planter lets you grow 3 plants spaced evenly for a fuller display. Repot or refresh the top half of the potting mix each spring, because strawberries are heavy feeders when they’re flowering and fruiting. In containers, pair Everbearing Strawberry with basil plants and chives to create a useful patio planting that won’t shade the crowns. In the landscape, tuck them near oregano and thyme as edging that stays low and keeps the bed looking finished.
Watering Everbearing Strawberry
Keep soil consistently moist, aiming for roughly 1 inch of water per week. Water at the base so leaves and fruit dry quickly. Small, seedy berries and dull foliage usually indicate under-watering, while constantly wet soil can lead to root issues and soft fruit.
Feeding Everbearing Strawberry
Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer or compost to support healthy leaf growth, and fertilize again after the first harvest to support the next flush of flowers. A gentle, steady feeding schedule produces better repeat fruiting than heavy doses and helps plants hold their energy through summer.
