The Dwarf Serbian Spruce Tree Form (Picea omorika 'Nana') is a slow-growing, compact evergreen grafted onto a clear trunk to create a distinctive lollipop silhouette. Its short, dense needles are dark green on top and display striking silver-blue undersides, giving the plant a two-toned appearance year-round. In its standard tree form, it matures to around 4 feet tall with a spread of about 2 feet, making it a refined, small-scale focal point. This evergreen is an excellent choice for patios, entryways, containers, and accent plantings where a tidy, sculptural look is desired.
The compact, globose canopy of the Dwarf Serbian Spruce Tree Form adds fine texture and elegant form to any garden composition. New spring growth emerges in a bright, lighter green before settling into its characteristic dark green. This plant is cold hardy down to USDA Zone 3 and adapts well to a range of soil types. It is best planted in a sheltered location, as it is sensitive to urban pollution and benefits from some protection from harsh environmental conditions.
Dwarf Serbian Spruce Tree Form Care
Plant your Dwarf Serbian Spruce Tree Form in a location that receives full sun, providing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It performs best in average to evenly moist, well-drained soil and is not particular about soil pH or type. Water regularly after planting to help the tree establish, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Mulching around the base will help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
This is a low-maintenance tree that requires very little pruning. When pruning is necessary, trim only the new growth from the current season or remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy cutting, as this can disrupt the plant's naturally neat form. Because this variety is grafted, check regularly for any shoots emerging from below the graft union on the trunk and remove them promptly to preserve the tree form.
Dwarf Serbian Spruce Tree Form Spacing
Plant Dwarf Serbian Spruce Tree Form at least 2 to 3 feet away from other plants or structures to allow for its mature spread and adequate air circulation. It works well as a standalone specimen in a patio container at least 12-14 inches in diameter. Choose a sheltered spot away from heavy winds and pollution to keep the plant healthy and looking its best.
