The Dwarf Mountain Pine Tree, or Pinus mugo 'Sherwood Compact', is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer shrub with a dense, rounded, mound-like form. Its short, stiff branches are packed with slightly twisted, dark green needles that hold their rich color through all four seasons. In winter, the needles develop golden tips and white candle-like new growth that add striking multi-toned visual interest. At maturity, this compact pine reaches just 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, making it an ideal fit for smaller gardens, containers, and rock garden settings.
Discovered in the 1950s by plantsman Andy Sherwood, this selection is one of the most refined dwarf mugo pines available. Its naturally tidy habit means it rarely needs pruning to maintain its shape. The Dwarf Mountain Pine Tree is extremely cold hardy, tolerates environmental salt, and resists deer. It is a versatile, long-lived plant that can thrive for 50 years or more under the right conditions.
Dwarf Mountain Pine Tree Care
Plant Dwarf Mountain Pine in a location that receives full sun, as it requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to perform its best. It grows well in a range of well-drained soil types and is not particular about soil pH, though it will not tolerate standing water. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to help establish a healthy root system. Once established, reduce watering frequency, as this pine is quite drought tolerant and prefers dry to average moisture levels.
Feed your Dwarf Mountain Pine with a general purpose granular fertilizer before new growth begins in the spring. This plant forms a naturally neat, compact mound and generally does not require routine pruning to maintain its shape. If pruning is needed, trim back only the new growth of the current season and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid cutting back into old wood, as the plant will not regenerate growth from bare stems.
Dwarf Mountain Pine Tree Spacing
Plant Dwarf Mountain Pine Trees 3 to 4 feet apart when grouping them together, or use a single specimen as an accent plant in a border, rock garden, or container. When potting, use a large, 16–24 inch diameter container for long-term health.
This plant fills out all the way to the ground, so it does not require low-growing plants in front to fill gaps. Keep it away from areas with poor drainage or standing water, as wet soil conditions can be fatal. Its compact size makes it especially well suited for small yards, patios, and raised beds where space is limited.
