The Dwarf Japanese Juniper Tree Form, or Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' - Std, is a grafted ornamental evergreen trained into a striking patio tree. It features a dense, spreading canopy of blue-green foliage rising from a single upright standard trunk. The canopy grows wider than it does tall, giving it a layered, architectural look that stands out in any landscape. This compact tree form typically reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, making it well suited for small spaces, containers, and entryways.
This plant is prized for its year-round evergreen color and its low, mounding canopy that adds texture and structure to the garden in every season. It works beautifully as a specimen plant, a focal point on a patio or deck, or as a symmetrical pair flanking a doorway. The fine-textured foliage holds its blue-green color through winter, providing visual interest even in colder months. It is a slow grower, making it easy to maintain and well suited for tidy, manicured landscapes.
Dwarf Japanese Juniper Tree Form Care
Plant your Dwarf Japanese Juniper Tree Form in full sun for the best growth and density. It adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils and tolerates both sandy and clay conditions as long as water does not pool around the roots.
Water regularly after planting to help the tree establish, then reduce frequency once it is settled in. After the first year, this juniper is quite drought tolerant and only needs watering during extended dry spells. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy new growth.
Very little pruning is needed to maintain the tree form's shape. Trim any shoots that extend beyond the desired canopy outline in late spring or early summer after the new growth has flushed. Remove any suckers or shoots that emerge from the trunk or below the graft union promptly, as these can overtake the grafted top. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as junipers do not reliably regenerate from bare stems.
Dwarf Japanese Juniper Tree Form Spacing
Plant Dwarf Japanese Juniper Tree Forms 3 to 4 feet apart when used in groupings, or give a single specimen at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides. They perform especially well in containers with at least a 16-inch diameter and a loose potting soil with extra perlite for drainage. Keep the trunk clear of mulch piled against the base, and avoid planting in low-lying areas where water tends to collect.
