Crimson Kisses® Weigela (Weigela x ‘Slingco 1’ PP#23,654) delivers bold, lipstick-red flowers marked with a crisp white eye from late spring into summer, with repeat blooms that carry color well beyond the first flush. Its compact, rounded form matures at about 3 feet tall and wide, making it easy to incorporate into smaller landscapes without crowding neighboring plants. The deep green foliage sets off the saturated red blossoms, creating strong contrast even from across the yard. This selection keeps the show going much longer than older weigela varieties that bloom once and fade into the background. We often recommend it for front-yard foundation beds where clients want a long season of color but don’t want to manage an oversized shrub.

This deciduous shrub forms a dense, mounded habit that stays neat with minimal shaping. The tubular flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds and other pollinators, adding movement and wildlife interest to the garden. Crimson Kisses® tolerates urban conditions and adapts well to a range of soils, provided drainage is good. Once established, it handles periodic dry spells with ease and has shown dependable performance in cold climates down to Zone 4. Use it in mass plantings, low hedges, mixed shrub borders, or large patio containers where its steady reblooming habit can be appreciated up close.

Crimson Kisses® Weigela Care

Plant Crimson Kisses® Weigela in full sun for the strongest flower display and most compact growth. It grows well in average garden soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, roughly 6.0 to 7.5, and benefits from soil amended with compost at planting time. Water thoroughly during the first growing season, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between soakings. In subsequent years, provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to support repeat blooming. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins.

Because this shrub primarily flowers on wood produced the previous season, shape or trim it soon after the main spring bloom cycle. Remove a few of the oldest stems at the base every couple of years to refresh the plant and encourage strong new shoots. Light thinning helps maintain its rounded form without heavy shearing. A lighter bloom on new wood occurs later in the season. In colder regions, a layer of mulch around the root zone can help moderate winter temperature swings.

Crimson Kisses® Weigela Spacing

Space Crimson Kisses® Weigela about 3 feet apart when planting in a row or informal hedge so each shrub can develop its natural mound. For grouped plantings in borders, allow the same distance center-to-center for a full, continuous look. When growing in containers, select a pot at least 18 inches wide and deep to accommodate root growth and seasonal moisture needs.
