Cougar Cub™ Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘SueCKat’ PP#35,764) lights up the landscape with clear, golden-yellow foliage that appears shortly after the last frost. Its bright leaves arrive earlier than many other ninebarks, giving gardens a welcome shot of color at the very start of the season. In late spring, clusters of soft white flowers rise above the foliage, followed by coral-red fruit that lingers for several weeks in summer. This compact shrub matures at about 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, offering strong color impact without overwhelming smaller spaces. We keep coming back to Cougar Cub™ for bold foliage that consistently delivers that early-season glow.
As a North American native selection, ninebark is valued for durability and adaptability. Cougar Cub™ forms a neat, upright-rounded shape and holds its color best in full sun. The flowers attract pollinators, and the exfoliating bark adds subtle winter interest once leaves drop. It tolerates urban conditions, cold winters, and a range of soil types better than many ornamental shrubs. Use it in foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, low hedges, wildlife gardens, or as a focal point in large patio containers.
Cougar Cub™ Ninebark Care
Plant Cougar Cub™ Ninebark in full sun for the brightest foliage color, although it will tolerate light shade. It grows well in average garden soil, including loam or amended clay, with good drainage and a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots, then reduce frequency as the plant matures; established shrubs handle moderate dry periods. A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and protect roots during temperature swings. Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost in early spring before new growth begins.
Prune shortly after flowering if shaping is needed, as blooms form on older wood. Remove a few of the oldest stems at the base every few years to encourage fresh growth and maintain a dense habit. Light thinning improves air circulation, but routine shearing is rarely necessary. In colder climates, no special winter protection is required beyond mulch at the base.
Cougar Cub™ Ninebark Spacing
Space Cougar Cub™ Ninebark about 3 feet apart for hedges or mass plantings to create a continuous band of golden foliage. For individual specimen use, allow 4 feet between plants so each shrub can show its natural form. In containers, choose a pot at least 20 inches wide and deep. Pair it with purple coral bells, blue oat grass, or trailing calibrachoa for high contrast.
