Costoluto Genovese Tomato Plant

This heirloom tomato variety bears unusually large fruit (about 200 grams each) with a slightly tart flavor. The large, red, flattened, deeply ribbed fruits are good for sauces, soups, and juices, or sliced on bread or in a sandwich. It is also a great variety to grow for preserving and cooking because the flavor intensity will increase with heat. After planting, you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor within 70-80 days. This is an indeterminate tomato type.

You can start this plant inside and then harden off and transplant it outdoors when all danger of frost has passed in the spring. Make sure you plant Costoluto Genovese in well-draining soil in direct sunlight. Frequent pruning is beneficial because it will improve air flow surrounding the plant. It also helps reduce the risk of tomato diseases.

Growing Costoluto Genovese Tomato Plant 

Start your tomato plant indoors in early spring and then transplant it outdoors when danger of frost has passed. Plant your seedlings 3 feet apart into rich soil in full sun. Provide strong stakes or tall wire cages—this plant can reach up to 8 feet tall. You’ll be able to harvest your tomatoes about 70-80 days after planting.

Tomatoes are great in container gardens. If growing in a container, make sure it is at least 24-48 inches deep and 18-36 inches in diameter. You’ll need to water your container plant more than you would if it were planted in the garden. It’s important that your container has good drainage, as your tomato plant should not sit in water.
