Trailing succulents are the easiest plants to care for. Cliff Cotyledon Succulent (Cotyledon pendens) is one of these plants. The foliage is always interesting 12 months of the year, while the flowers are typically showstoppers when they appear. The frosty gray-green leaves stay plump and juicy all year round. In midsummer, the sunset-colored blooms explode at the tip of every branch.

Best Locations For Growing Cliff Cotyledon

Cliff Cotyledon needs a spot where its long branches can hang down. Planting it in a hanging basket is foolproof. Placing the pot on the edge of a tall bookcase or wide window sill will allow this succulent to be displayed in its full glory. It is not recommended to grow this plant in an area accessible to children and pets. All parts of this plant are poisonous.

Cliff Cotyledon Succulent Sunlight Requirements

Cotyledons need as much full sun exposure as possible. Indoors, that will mean a south- or southwest-facing window. The full sun helps this succulent maintain vibrant coloring and will encourage blooming. For most USDA growing zones, Cliff Cotyledon can be grown outdoors in the summer. Gradually harden the plant off by putting it in a semi-shaded spot for a few days before moving it into direct midday sun.

Cliff Cotyledon Care

Cotyledons are native to semi-arid areas of South Africa and thrive on low humidity and infrequent watering. Plant Cliff Cotyledon in fast-draining potting soil with perlite and sharp sand added. Cotyledon does not tolerate extremes in temperature. Temperatures below 50 degrees F will kill the plant, while temperatures over 85 F will send the plant into hibernation until the temperature cools. The leaves will change to shades of dusty pink and orange as the flowers form and bloom. This is normal and adds to the intrigue of Cliff Cotyledon.

Watering Cliff Cotyledon Succulent

Cliff Cotyledon requires different amounts of water as the seasons change. The spring and summer time is when this plant puts on the most growth and prepares to flower. Watering once a week will support the plant so that it will not need to use the moisture reserves in the leaves. Cliff Cotyledon dramatically slows growth in the fall and winter. Watering may only be necessary once or twice a month in winter, depending on the humidity in your home. Always empty saucers after watering, so the plant does not sit in water. 

Feeding Cliff Cotyledon Succulent

Fertilizing with an Orchid feed once or twice during the primary growing season will help flowers to form. Liquid fertilizers are easy to use and can be applied once in spring and once after flowers form in the early summer.
