Bubble Bath™ Hardy Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘HYLV19557’ USPP37039, CPBRAF) covers itself in bloom from top to bottom. Creamy lime panicles open in early summer and hold their color well into fall, creating the look of a shrub wrapped in fresh flowers. At just 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, it fits easily into smaller landscapes where traditional panicle hydrangeas feel oversized. The flower heads are full and densely packed, giving the plant a substantial presence despite its compact stature. In our trial beds, we found it outperformed many older compact varieties in both bloom count and stem strength.
This selection belongs to the paniculata group, native to parts of Asia, and is valued for cold hardiness and dependable flowering on new growth. Stems are sturdy and upright, so blooms stay presentable through summer heat. It is deciduous, with clean green foliage that supports the floral display. Pollinators visit the flowers during peak bloom. Use Bubble Bath™ in foundation plantings, low hedges, mass plantings, mixed borders, or patio containers where consistent color is needed from early summer onward.
Bubble Bath™ Hardy Hydrangea Care
Plant Bubble Bath™ in full sun to part sun for best flower production. In hotter climates, light afternoon shade helps preserve bloom quality. Choose well-drained soil with moderate fertility. This hydrangea tolerates a range of soil textures, from loam to amended clay, and performs well in slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during the first growing season and during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced shrub fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins.
Because it blooms on new wood, prune Bubble Bath™ in late winter or early spring before leaves emerge. Reduce overall height by about one-third to encourage strong stems and abundant panicles. Remove any weak, crossing, or damaged branches. In colder regions, a layer of mulch over the root zone in late fall provides added winter protection.
Bubble Bath™ Hardy Hydrangea Spacing
Space plants about 2½ to 3 feet apart when creating a low flowering hedge or mass planting. This allows mature plants to meet without crowding. For containers, use a pot at least 16 to 20 inches in diameter with good drainage. Pair it with sun-tolerant companions such as dwarf ornamental grasses, compact catmint, or trailing annuals planted around the edge to soften the container and highlight the hydrangea’s abundant blooms.
